Cleric Symbols [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-05-07, 11:13 AM Im kinda new here and to d&d so first off, hi everyone!

Second I have some questions about Cerlic Symbols and how they work.

Is the symbol used up as soon as it activates, such as a party member walks around the corner and activates the symbol(symbol of sleep) and he then goes to sleep. Then someone else walks around the corner and they can see the symbol just like the first one so would that second person fall under the effects too? Or does it disipate after it goes off?

As for the Symbol spells, they remain dormant until they are activated. Once activated they are active until they do a certain amount of damage or for a certain amount of time. Once they have fulfilled the damage or time requirement then the spell is finished and dissipates. The Symbol of Sleep spell lasts for 10 minutes per level of the caster that created it once it is activated, no matter how many creatures are affected by it. For example, a 9th level caster creates one and once it is activated it will last for 90 minutes. During this time any number of creatures can be affected by it but once the 90 minutes is over the spell dissipates and is gone.

I can't see how writing the Symbol on a tiny ball and throwing it would somehow get more people than simply writing it on somthing big, shrinking it down, then unshrinking it when needed.

It also requires the unaffected people to do what the lich wants and stop fighting him.

In the cartoon, if the 3 paladins that seemed to be beating the Lich simply ignored their doomed friends, it looks to me like they could have at least destroyed the Lich's body before being killed by their friends.
