| Strange Charm06-23-04, 12:16 PM | Clerical domain staffs can be used by clerics to cast domain spells from a specified domain. Only a cleric with the specified domain can use the corresponding domain staff. In addition to the normal versions, clerical domain staffs also come in lesser and greater varieties. Normal and greater clerical domain staffs are major majic items. The lesser variety is somewhat less common than the normal variety (at higher levels), and the greater variety is a bit rare. Since NPC clerics are not very likely to have the same domains as the PC cleric(s), you can expect most of these staffs to be pawned off. (A high-level rouge might get some use out of them, though.) Design observations: Caster level increases evenly, by four each step, as one goes from the lesser to normal to greater varieties. Spells with levels up to CL/4 cost 1 charge. Next two (spell levels = CL/4 + 1 and CL/4 + 2) cost 2 charges. Each higher level spell costs one more charge than the last. This results in the highest level spell (spell level = CL/2) costing CL/4 charges. (Yes, I did all this on purpose.) Why no 9th-level spells? See design observations, above; the pattern breaks. And...I basicly nerfed miracle from the Luck domain. Do you really want the PCs to have access to 12 consecutive free miracles? (One major majic item.... I know! I'll throw in four rings of three wishes! :nonono: )Also, with the element and alignment domains, they can summon a small horde (without expending any of their own spells) and trapse through a dungeon. Who uses "trapse" anymore? I do. |
