Okay, the Extra Spell states that you can choose one spell up to one level lower than the highest you can cast and add it to your spells known.

Can a cleric use it to choose a spell that is domain specific and add it to his list of spells known?

This is covered in the 3.5 FAQ:
...No. Extra Spell lets you add one spell to your list of spells
known, but the spell must be taken from your class spell list....This has bee a point of contention with some people, but the FAQ is quite clear. You might want to talk to your DM. He/she might let you take a domain spell with the feat.

The FAQ answer was specific to the Warmage, and doesn't address whether domain spells are on the Cleric's class spell list. The intent of the Extra Spell feat was to provide Wizards access to spells that were on their class spell list, but in prohibited schools. Many domain spells are not on the general Cleric spell list, but that doesn't mean they're not on the Cleric class spell list. Since you've generally got to be a member of the Cleric class to have access to domain spells, I think it's a reasonable interpretation that all domain spells are on the Cleric class spell list; they're just effectively prohibited, as are spells with conflicting alignment descriptors.

From the Extra Spell feat description:... Extra Spell is generally used to learn a specific spell that the character lacks access to and would be unable to research. Frankly, as a DM I'd have fewer problems letting a character take Extra Spell to use a domain spell without domain spell restrictions than if the Cleric wanted to use a spell of opposed alignment. There are only rules interpretation problems with the former case, but divine retribution possibilities with the latter -- even though bypassing alignment restrictions with Extra Spell is perfectly OK by the rules.

Actually, it is fairly easy to argue against that because...

Divine Power
Evocation
Level: Clr 4, War 4

Chain Lightning
Evocation [Electricity]
Level: Air 6, Sor/Wiz 6

Cleric and Domain spells are treated differently. When a spell is from a domain, it's not labeled as a Cleric spell... it's labeled strictly as a domain spell.

The three things I can see happening with this are:

Extra spell does nothing. Domains are a special mechanic that allow Clerics to add spells of other classes to their lists, but do not change that the spell is another classes.
You maintain a separate domain spell list. If you use extra spell, you gain the use of that spell only in the domain spell slot of the appropriate level.
Extra spell may grant any spell listed as a domain spell.

Numbers 1 and 3 are not entirely supported since a distinction is drawn between normal spells and domain spells. Number 3 is just a blatant back-door abuse to gain spells from other class lists which is clearly against the intent of the feat as shown in the FAQ.

Number 2 has no precedent but it makes sense mechanically IMHO. :)

DarkRhystar, you forgot one other possibility:

4. Extra Spell allows a domain spell you already have, without domain restrictions.

The reasoning for this one is that such spells are on your Cleric class list because of your domain choices.

I would politely contend there is a difference between a domain spell and a Cleric spell which invalidates your argument based on the following points:

You may not use a domain spell in a Cleric spell slot. Domain spells get their own set of slots.
Domain spells are (as shown above) classified by their domain rather than as Cleric spells in spell descriptions.

Many domain spells are not on the general Cleric spell list, but that doesn't mean they're not on the Cleric class spell list.

Spells from Domains that you do not have are NOT part of a Cleric's class spell list (FAQ p30.)

So Extra Spell will NOT add a Domain spell not currently on the Cleric's class spell list.

Extra Spell MAY (depending on your DM's interpretation) allow you cast a spell only on a domain list in normal spell slots (because the spell is on the Cleric's class spell list but only usable in a domain slot.) If the DM allows, this would permit you to cast the spell using normal cleric spell slots in addition to domain spells.

The easiest way to answer this question is: can you activate a wand containing a spell you wish to add via extra spell?

If yes, then its fair game. No? Then though luck...:P

Wow, thanks for the many responses! Okay, so only spells within the chosen domains and cleric class list can be chosen with Extra Spell. The reason for this inquiry was if I could have taken the anyspell from the Spell domain without having chosen the domain. But I was wrong.

Looks like I will have to do the tried and true method of independent research. :D

I have a favor for anyone who has the Dragon magazine issue 335. Can you post the essential cleric spells #1-3 from the Class Acts section, please? I have the issue after that with 4-6 spells listed but I'd like to know the lesser spells as well. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Also, can anyone send me links to posts on the boards that list the best spells for clerics? I think I saw one awhile ago, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Thanks.

So clerics do have a use for extra spell, they can use it to add domain spells to their main spell list.:)
