Could a cleric with the improved counterspell feat counterspell a wizard spell that is not on the cleric spell list? I do not mean by using dispel magic.

ex Could above cleric counterspell a fireball (provide he passes his spellcraft check) cast by a wizard with a Divine Power spell (4th level evocation spell)?

I'd say yes. The Improved Counterspelling feat doesn't make a distinction between arcane and divine spells, just the school. So your example is valid.

And it would certainly surprise the wizard.

I'd allow it...

No, but only because divine power has a range of personal; you can't counter a spell if the caster is out of range of the spell you use to counter with. A cleric with Improved Counterspell could counter a fireball with a different fourth level evocation spell. (There don't happen to be any fourth level evocation spells on the core cleric spell list with range greater than touch, but that's irrelevant.)

with Improved Counter spell the cleric could counter the fireball with a flamestrike for example.

170, players guild.

Counterspelling works even if one spell is divine and the other arcane

hmmm. i read futher down and im not so sure anymore. hmm...

*edit*

It would have to be counterd with a dispell magic. witch everyone gets. also spells with oposit effects counter echother so i think a ice spell would counter a fire spell. common sense. they list spells such as hast vs slow though, so maybe element diffrences dont work

He's talking about using the Improved Counterspelling feat, which lets him use a higher level spell of the same school to counter, instead of the same/opposite spell. Example: Improved Counterspelling Cleric readies an action to counterspell. A wizard tries to cast Lightning Bolt (A 3rd level evocation). The cleric could choose, for example, Flame Strike (A 6th level evocation) to counterspell.

Yes, in general, a cleric can counterspell a wizard's spell, and vice versa. A wizard casting Hold Person can be countered by the cleric casting Hold Person or vice versa (or with dispell magic)

With the improved counterspell feat, the cleric can use a spell from the same school as the one being cast by the wizard to counterspell, but it must be at least one level higher than the spell being cast.

The wizard must be in range of the spell being used to counterspell.

For example, a wizard casting Touch of Idiocy (wiz 2, enchantment, range: touch) could be countered by a cleric with the improved counterspell feat casting Prayer (clr 3, enchantment, range: 40 ft) so long as the wizard was within 40 ft of the cleric at the time.

Likewise, a cleric casting Divine Power (clr 4, evocation, range: personal) could be countered by a wizard with the improved counterspell feat casting Wall of Force (wiz 5, evocation, range: close) as long as the cleric was within close range of the wizard at the time.

Thanks for all the replies. I am thinking of playing a cleric that is kind of a non combantant, maybe a cloistered cleric for Unearthed Arcana, so being able to counterspell a wizard will be fun.

Could this cleric use a domain spell to counterspell?

Sure! Any spell can be used to counter. Spell-like abilities can't, though.
