I thought I read somewhere that in order to substitute other spells for curing spells of the same level, they had to take a full round action in order to do it. My player asked me where I got this idea from as he didn't see it anywhere in his Players Handbook and suddenly I couldn't find the rule!

Did I make this rule up? If so, then why would a good aligned Cleric ever memorize a cure spell? Is there no disadvantage whatsoever in this ability?

Thanks!

You are correct, it is in the core books (but not the SRD - SRD leaves out key things like amount of XP it takes to level up).

Thanks for confirming, but does anyone have a page number for me? Sorry, I seriously can't find it anywhere!

This is the first I've ever heard of this.

It takes a full round action to use a metamagic enhanced spontaneous cure spell. Perhaps that is what you are thinking of.

The ability is a little strong for my taste as well. Maybe making it a full round action would be a good compromise.

Unless you are referring to metamagic spells and spontaneous cure spells (as zudbash) mentioned, you are entirely incorrect Tarkin. A cleric can spontaneously cast cure spells as a standard action. Summon Nature's Ally for a druid would take a full round - but that's because the spell already has that casting time.

Hey where does it say that spontaneous cure spells takes longer? I looked into the phb and it is no where to be seen.

It doesn't say spontaneous cures take longer - Tarkin is incorrect. What it does say is spontaneous spells altered by a metamagic feat take longer.

Spontaneous Casting of Cure and Inflict Spells: A good cleric (or a cleric of a good deity) can spontaneously cast a cure spell in place of a prepared spell of the same level or higher, but not in place of a domain spell. An evil cleric (or a cleric of an evil deity) can spontaneously cast an inflict spell in place of a prepared spell (one that is not a domain spell) of the same level or higher. Each neutral cleric of a neutral deity either spontaneously casts cure spells like a good cleric or inflict spells like an evil one, depending on which option the player chooses when creating the character. The divine energy of the spell that the cure or inflict spell substitutes for is converted into the cure or inflict spell as if that spell had been prepared all along.

Sorcerers and Bards: Sorcerers and bards choose spells as they cast them. They can choose when they cast their spells whether to apply their metamagic feats to improve them. As with other spellcasters, the improved spell uses up a higher-level spell slot. But because the sorcerer or bard has not prepared the spell in a metamagic form in advance, he must apply the metamagic feat on the spot. Therefore, such a character must also take more time to cast a metamagic spell (one enhanced by a metamagic feat) than he does to cast a regular spell. If the spell’s normal casting time is 1 action, casting a metamagic version is a full-round action for a sorcerer or bard. (This isn’t the same as a 1-round casting time.)
For a spell with a longer casting time, it takes an extra full-round action to cast the spell.
Spontaneous Casting and Metamagic Feats: A cleric spontaneously casting a cure or inflict spell can cast a metamagic version of it instead. Extra time is also required in this case. Casting a 1-action metamagic spell spontaneously is a full-round action, and a spell with a longer casting time takes an extra full-round action to cast.

That should be all the appropriate text...

Yeah, I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the answers guys, I guess I must have misread the section on Clerics and Metamagic.

Still seems like Clerics have it pretty easy when it comes to curing though! Why would a Cleric ever memorize an actual cure spell? I guess they wouldn't.....

Maybe I'll just house rule it! :D

they purposely did it so that good clerics would not have to actualy prepare curing spells C_V, in previous editions it was such a limiting factor that clerics had to spend the vast majority of their spells per day memorizing curing spells that nobody ever wanted to play one.
