Or is it just cheating, trying to escape taking the feat Forge Ring by exploiting Craft Wondrous? |
| Beamup08-20-04, 02:39 PM | You could certainly do it. But you would potentially fall afoul of the body slot affinities. For example, making boots of invisibility would cost 50% more because invisibility doesn't have anything to do with movement, which is the affinity associated with boots. Cloaks are transformation and protection, and invisibility could be considered a form of protection. Probably not, though, so you'd be 50% more again. That's why Forge Ring is different from Craft Wonderous Item - you can put anything into a ring without worrying about body slot affinities. |
| Tali Alia08-20-04, 02:48 PM | Yeah, rings are great... but you can only wear so very few of them... :tantrum: Well, I'm off to talk to my DM about cloaks! ;) Thanks for the advice, Beamup. |
| Heron_Marked_Blade08-20-04, 02:54 PM | If you have rings that grant minor but important abilities (such as feather fall or sustenance), consider making them unslotted. The rings' costs will increase by x2, but you can wear them without worrying about them taking up a valuable ring slot. I'd gladly pay 4,400gp for an unslotted ring of feather fall, or 5,000gp for an unslotted ring of sustenance. |

Also, 8,000gp for an unslotted ring of counterspells seems good value at higher levels. Don't you just love Craft Wondrous? Cheers Heron, Tali |
| Ipsissimus08-21-04, 06:04 AM | You can always have a double slotted ring, like a ring of featherfall + ring of protection +2. It's only 1.5 the cost, the equations are in the back of the DMG. As for a cloak of invisibility? Sure, why not...they have 2 cloaks of displacement and a cloak of invisibility is so commonly depicted in movies, books, the D&D old cartoon...it shouldn't cost you more to create, you would just use it the same was as the ring. If you want to wear more than 2 rings? Get one of those mummy hands that lets you wear 3...but then you would be freak. |
| Methos of Aundair08-21-04, 08:29 AM | The original cartoon Dungeons & Dragons had a character who wore a cloak of invisibility. In order to use its abilities, she pulled the hood over her head and became invisible. I can't remember the exact name of the cartoon, I believe it was out in the early to mid 80's. I just remember watching it. |
| VolkorTheRed08-21-04, 08:48 AM | Normally if you want to make things like a Cloak of invisibility you would also need the feat Forge Ring on top of the feat Craft Wondrous item , because you want to put an existing items abilities into another item, which has nothing to do with its original affinity. It stands explained somewhere in the DMG, don't remember where though, sorry :embarrass As for the rings maximum number: in our playing group a character can wear 4 rings in total :D We always felt that two rings in total was just too few... Everyone can always "houserule" things like this, if anyone in the group agrees on it :) (especially the DM ;) ) |
