Hi, a cloak of resistance costs 1000 x bonus squared.

If i wanted to protect my fighter and make him a cloak that improves only his Will (and not the other 2 saves), how much would that cost?

10% less?, 15%? Same price?

Tell me what you think!

What have you got against the other two saves? :)

I would say how is sentence and comment structured the answer would be gold (aka money).

I am sure thats what he whats to know, but I am saying its a budget constraint. You now he cant afford a full spectrum cloak or ot buy a bigger plus for one of his weaker saves for the same cost or whatever.

So you want a cloak that grants a resistance bonus to will saves only? Just off the top of my head - half price seems reasonable.

What I'm seeing is that he wants the fighter to be un-enchanted more often then not. I'd personally talk to your dm and see if you could just make a cloak of will resistance which would grant a +3 will bonus at the same cost of a single cloak of resistance(+1 to 3 saves) which I would think would even out since it is +3 save bonus.

It would be up to the dm though.

Higher saves increase exponentially in price.

I like the half-price idea for one save. Later he can pay half again and have it enchanted to cover all three.

Hmm, or you could act like each save is put in individually...

then the price for a regular cloak is X + 1.5X + 1.5X, where X is the price of one enchantment to a single save.

Then the price for just increasing one is 1/4 the price of the entire cloak. (1 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 4)--way too low, imho.

I'd say half-price for one save, three-quarters for two, full price for all three.

My thoughts exactly...well pretty much.

With the Will-only cloak, you're getting 1/3 of the normal benefit of a cloak of resistance (one save out of three). Normally you don't get a full refund from stripping features off of magic items. Since 1/3 < 1/2, 1/2 seemed like the reasonable discount level.

Did that make any sense?

That's exactly how I got to one half. One third seemed too good, so 1/2 was the next step.

Uh .. doesn't this item exist somewhere else?? I swear I've seen it somewhere .. I think it was called, however, a Helm of Mental Clarity??

Miniatures maybe? or complete warrior?? can't recall ..

.. but yeah .. I seem to recall seeing at 1/2 the price of a cloak of the same bonus ..

There were some items in Dragon once that gave bonuses to one save, and some other relatively minor effects. I remember that I used the item pricing guidelines to work backward, subtracting the minor effects, and it worked out that the single save was exactly half what it would have been for all three.

I think it might have been a luck bonus instead or resistance, and I don't think they were cloaks.

Interesting. If it was some other bonus, then half the cost of the full thing is directly in line with my 1/4 cost for a similar resistance bonus to one save. Other bonuses cost twice as much as normal, you see.

I should have been clearer.

I don't remember if the bonuses were resistance or something else.

If it was a resistance bonus, then the formula (which I don't remember) worked out to 500 X bonus squared. If it was a luck or competence bonus, then the formula worked out to 1000 X bonus squared.

I remember checking the type of bonus, prepared to halve the base formula if it turned out to be luck or competence. I just don't remember if I had to do so.

Anyway, I clearly remember my conclusion: a resistance bonus to one save is worth 500 X bonus squared.

Not what I was thinking ... I'm absolutely positive there is an item like this in one of the Complete books ... damn ... I'll see if my friend remembers ..
