Basically an item that allows you to cast spells into it that are triggered by certain specific events? If this exists, can you point me in the right direction and let me know which book it is detailed in? Thanks in advance! |

Basically an item that allows you to cast spells into it that are triggered by certain specific events? If this exists, can you point me in the right direction and let me know which book it is detailed in? Thanks in advance! Make it a ring so you don't have to pay Slot Affinity. Use Ring of Spell Storing for the spell to be casted; based on 6th level: 6*6*2,000 = 72,000 gp Price the Contingency based on the spell and see if it is correctly priced: 6*11*2,000 (use actived by casting a spell into the item) = 132,000 gp Contingency has a focus cost of 1,500 gp. You have options: 1) Add them 72,000 + 132,000 + 1,500 = 205,500 gp 2) Assume the Contingency part covers the spell storing part = 132,000 + 1,500 = 133,500 I like option 1 now that I am looking at it, because this item is something a level 18th character might spend half his wealth to acquire. It should not be in the hands of anyone below level 15 because a Wizard requires 11th level to cast contingency and there is no reason to allow it below Wizard+4 levels (balance reasons.) |

| tarkin10-11-06, 10:59 AM | I would price it as a Contigency only effect. The spell storing is a side effect of the contigency. |
| Puca10-11-06, 11:11 AM | There is a feat in Complete Arcane that lets you craft contingency items. It wouldnt be as flexible as the ring, requiring all the time and resources of crafting for every spell, but it would be a lot less expensive. |
| Seeker9510-11-06, 11:28 AM | I would price it as a Contigency only effect. The spell storing is a side effect of the contigency. At first, this is how I thought about it too. But the spell storing is what makes the contingency capable of being applied to different spells (one-at-a-time) rather than restricted to a single spell. |
| tarkin10-11-06, 11:53 AM | I don't see it that way. If it was a single spell that was activated on a single contigency event, then it would not require the use of the spell contigency. That is just a standard "use activated item". I.E. The chime that when it is hit, opens all doors. This is in effect a 'contigency' that whent he chime is hit, it activates the magic effect. The reason why the contigency spell is needed at all, instead of simply declaring this a 'use activated item' with a strange 'use', is the ability to change which magical effect is activated. As the 'contigency' part is already created for free in all use activated items, the fact that we are using the spell contigency means something else - specifically it means the ability to store any spell. |
| Seeker9510-11-06, 01:18 PM | As the 'contigency' part is already created for free in all use activated items, the fact that we are using the spell contigency means something else - specifically it means the ability to store any spell. You have the front half of the utility covered. The second half of this item is that the contingency trigger is variable. Using both spell storing and contingency in the crafting of the item lets you change both the effect (spell storing) and the trigger (contingency) on a user-determined basis. |
| tarkin10-11-06, 01:25 PM | I don't think the fact that the trigger is variable is worth the full 130,000 +. I could see ruling that Spell Storing costs double and add in contigency as a pre-req, or spell storing + 1/2 the cost of contigency. But both of those things are so close to the base cost of just the contigency, that I don't think it is worth the difference. I can't see adding the entire cost of contigency to the entire cost of spell storing, considering that so much of the contigency spell is already included in the use activated price. |
| risner10-11-06, 02:09 PM | I don't like the "just" contingency cost because that means a level 16th character of any spell casting class has access to a Wiz/Sor only spell just 4 levels after the Wizard gets access and 3 levels after Sorcerer gets access. Spell Storing double (144k) and Spell Storing + Half Contingency (138k) are very close to 133k. |
| Heron_Marked_Blade10-11-06, 10:19 PM | This is when spell triggers from 2E would be useful. Contingency just doesn't offer the versatility of spell triggers. Has anyone worked those out in 3.5 while I've been gone? Worked them out in such a way that they're not seriously broken, that is? |
| Skye Silverleaf10-12-06, 03:55 PM | Hmmmm.................I guess that judging by all the discussion, there is no existing item already detailed in a source book. Oh well, I guess I have some homework to do. Thanks! |
| smrtgmp10-13-06, 07:18 AM | as mentioned above, check out the craft contingent spell feat from CA. Definately one of the best item creation feats around. |
