Just want to "double check" my logic on this.

Say you have a powerful spellcaster, who in preperation for the clone spell, takes a tissue sample, and preserves it magically.

Before getting to the cloning process, he dies.

Years later, someone takes the sample, and performes the cloning spell on it.

What do you have ?

You have a fully functional clone, provided the soul wishes to return.

Whats more interesting is his age would be unchanged from death. Works like a raise dead spell in the description. I would agree if the soul wished to return at that time it could.

Great concept for a new char btw.

Even better, the spell can be used to massproduce tarrasque backplates -> armor +5 & diamonds, dragon bodyparts and such..

Or just an endless source of prime meat.. It makes dead meat for free! :D

My understanding of the spell is that whatever condition he was at the time of the sample (i.e. alive), the spell would function when cast. Wizards keep SAMPLES in their treasure hoard...not a lifeless clone.

What I am looking to do is have the persons soul return, but with his memory badly fractured, and starting back at 1st level.

Kind of a "fresh start" without some of the issues that led him down the road that eventually led to his death.

It had occured to me to write him up as a hellbred, maybe with the "past life" special ability from the DMGII.
