What happens if a cloudkill rolls along a flat surface straight towards a solid stone wall? I see three possibilities. It could:
1) stop moving once it touches the wall
2) progressively disappear into the wall and cease to exist
3) spread out and flatten along the side of the wall, keeping the same total volume.

If someone cast Cloudkill into a pit of 20' radius, would the cloudkill just fill the pit for the duration of the spell?
How does this spell work? Please advise!

From the SRD:... the cloudkill moves away from you at 10 feet per round, rolling along the surface of the ground. Figure out the cloud’s new spread each round based on its new point of origin, which is 10 feet farther away from the point of origin where you cast the spell. Because the vapors are heavier than air, they sink to the lowest level of the land, even pouring down den or sinkhole openings. It cannot penetrate liquids, nor can it be cast underwater.

Cloudkill is a spread affect that "follows the route of least resistance". I don't think it would do any of the options you have suggested. Rather it will continue to move in the direction closest to that which it originally was, or closest to the direction of gravity depending on the situation. If it hits the wall at an angle I would say it then moves along the wall in the direction of the obtuse angle of contact. If it hits staight on, it would move in whichever direction is more downhill. If you're in a perfectly flat room, roll a die to randomly determine its direction. Whatever happens it will stay in its defined shape, not spread out into a different one. For the purposes of the above, consider the centre of the spread to be the point of contact - so if it hits a wall and then moves along it, it will be a semicircular cloud with its centre touching the wall.
Cast into a pit it will just sit there, yes.

It keeps spreading along the wall until it runs out of time, space, or wall.

Am I the only one who would prefer this spell if it DIDN'T move around?

Just thought of another question - does the cloud always move away from the caster, even if they change position? ie can it be forced to move in a difference direction to the one it started in? ... the cloudkill moves away from you at 10 feet per round ...

PHB3.5 p.210, Cloudkill : "Figure out the cloud's new spread each round based on its new point of origin, which is 10 feet farther away from the point of origin where you cast the spell."

You can prevent its movement...

With a Forcecage. :schemes:
