Clr 5 spell that converts any wand to a healing type [Archive] - Wizards Community

I cannot recall which FR book I read it from, as I was going through mine yesterday. But, it has no material focus or compotent, it's a fifth level Cleric spell that lasts for 1 min/level and converts any wand to a Cure X wounds of the appropriate level...so a Wand of Dispel Magic with 16 charges would be converted to a Wand of Cure Serious Wounds with 16 charges. Once you heal up, and say have 11 charges left, at the end of the duration it reverts back to the Wand of Dispel Magic

So, does this sound like a decent spell to keep memorized or have around for those semi-neglected wands?

I don't like the idea of such a spell, for mostly gut reactions than anything else. But I do like the general idea.

I can see a Feat that does so, with prerequisites of: UMD at X ranks
"ability to spontaneously cast cure spells" (which also opens it to bards with such a spell chosen!)
craft wandsThis way not every cleric is going to be walking around with this. Rather, it would be a path a specific character had chosen.

If I were to design such a spell it would definitely involve level loss.

That is, the Dispell Magic wand would be a Cure Moderate, not a Cures Serious.

Wand Modulation is a Sor/Wiz 3 spell that can convert a wand to *any spell* with the penalty that A) the new spell must be at least one level lower than the wand B) each use costs 2 charges and C) the spells are cast at their mimimum possible caster level, regardless of the wand's level.

As a higher level spell with more restrictions, I could see waiving restriction C) and one of either A) or B).

So either a healing spell of the next lower level for one charge each, or a healing spell of the same level for two charges.

(honestly though, just buy wands of Vigor. So much better than curing wands anyway)

The spell is the aptly named "Convert Wand", located on p. 95 of the BoED.

Convert Wand
Transmutation
Level:Cleric 5
Components: V,S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Wand Touched
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell temporarily transforms a magic wand of any type into a healing wand with the same number of charges remaining. At the end of the spell's duration the wands original effect is restored, and any charges that were depleted remain so. The spell level of the wand determines how powerful a healing instrument the wand becomes:

Spell Level New Wand Type
1st Wand of cure light wounds
2nd Wand of cure moderate wounds
3rd Wand of cure serious wounds
4th Wand of cure critical wounds

For example a 10th-level cleric can transform a wand of lightning bolt (3rd-level spell) into a wand of cure serious wounds for 10 minutes

I still don't like the idea of a spell.
I like the idea of such a Feat.

But they don't have to errata the book on account of me. ;)

Not that they would... ;) Otherwise this board would have more "suggestions" than it already does.... And that's saying something.

Hm, for the spell as-is, a good pick?

I like it, personally.

Useful if you have an artificer in your party and you run out of healing wands.

(under the assumption that artificers carry lots of other wands...)

The spell isnt' a big deal. If you convert any wand other than a 1st level wand to a cure wand, you're paying a huge sum of money for healing, because wands of anything but cure light are very overpriced, so if you convert your wand of fireballs into a CSW wand, you're only cheating yourself.

As if that wasn't bad enough, you're wasting a 5th level cleric spell slot to do it.

Best use for this spell is if you've got a DM who enjoys handing out spiteful low level wands to high level parties, like a wand of burning hands or unseen servant.

Problem is that I really can't see a cleric preparing this spell. If you expected to run out of CLW wands in the middle of an adventure, you'd probably have just bought more in the first place, as opposed to dedicating a 5th level slot to replace a wand.

This is quite a nice spell, but definitely not overpowered.

Wands are pitifully weak after just a few levels of the characters getting them. After level 7 or 8 that wand of fireballs is always saved against by enemy, and rarely gets used. By level 10 it is almost a useless stick... with this spell, you can use a level 5 spell between battles and use up some wands that are sitting in backpacks and quivers of ehlonna, and get far more healing then that level 5 spell could have achieved.

Since a cleric can use this spell as a spontaneous healing during battle in an emergency, it isn't a waste to have one or two of these memorized each day.

This isn't gonna be used in the sense that i'll stock up on arcane wands and use them for healing, but it makes good use out of those wands you find that you rarely put to action anymore
