What if a Colossal Spellcaster cast Anti-life Shell? The spell creates a 10 radius hemisphere around the caster, but a Colossal Spellcaster is going to be an approximate 30 foot by 30 foot by 30 foot cube.

Does the spell not work for it? Does it extend 10 feet beyond the space of the Colossal Spellcaster? Or does it just prevent living creatures from touching the Colossal Spellcaster?

I guess it doesn't work then, unless you widen it or something...:P

It extends 10 feet beyond the space of the Colossal spellcaster.

If it started at an intersection, than even medium creatures wouldn't get full protection.

Why not? Medium characters are only 1 square...a 10-ft radius would be more than sufficient to encompass them...

PHB p199
Area: 10-ft.-radius emanation, centered on you

No doubt, it only extends 10 ft. So a third of the Colossal caster is covered.
Widen Spell would make it 20 ft radius (enough to cover the Colossal caster and provide 5ft extra.)

I don't believe this was how the spell was intended. I just recently fought a huge creature with an anti-life spell on, and the DM decided that the spell still extended 10' around the caster (which I agreed with despite what a strict RAW interpretation implied)

Some spells just aren't of much use to really large creatures.
This is one of them.

Agree @ mvincent's DM. It means, among other things, that large or bigger casters will get a larger area from an emenation spell, but that shouldn't hurt balance that much. It's not RAW, but it works for me.

I thought emanations emanate X' (eg 10') from the caster, regardless of size.

Emanation is from a single point of origin, which is independent of how large the casting creature is.:) If you are small enough to fit into the barrier, than good for you. Else, tough luck...:(

Rather than default a radius out from the caster's size/area, I think a Feat might be a decent idea. This prevents a shapechanging caster from getting variable "fixed" areas and offers an explanation (and a source of variability) for larger creatures having different casting abilities. Those with the Feat will use such spells, while those without the feat would choose not to use such spells.

Widen / enlarge could accomplish this already, but require a slot increase. The Feat I have in mind would apply to any such spell cast by a larger-than-normal creature.
