My sorcerer is standing behind the party tank. Both are facing the oncoming swarm of orcs. If my sorc fires off a Colour spray at the oncoming Orcs, is the party tank affected too, given that the colour spray is a visual effect and the tank is facing away from the spray?

Opinions?

There is no facing in 3.5 - as a seasoned fighter, your party tank will be glancing in all directions, 'checking his six', frequently over the course of an entire round.

You might get away with telling allies within the area of effect to close their eyes if your DM is generous, but that may alert your foes also.

Well, that answers that! Thanks!

Even closing your eyes won't help you.

Nothing in Color Spray says it does not affect blind people.

It is a Pattern. Patterns affect people that see it OR are caught in it. If you are in the area of effect, you are affected, even if you are blind.

Actually, it states explicitly in the spell desc of colour spray that sightless creatures are not affected by colour spray. This implies that they actually have to see the ray to be affected by it. A warrior forewarned could logically close his eyes and avoid being affected by it as well. But then, he would probably have to contend with the drawbacks of being effectively blind for that round. :)
