I like the bonding system for creating magic items but not that the item then is useless to others. I like the Legacy Item system but not its creation process so much. So, a crack at combining: All Legacy Items result from Bonding Process. Bonding Process revised: - base item must be masterwork, or maximum +1 enhancement bonus or maximum 4000gp value if other type [cf legacy base], only such items can be enhanced by bonding; - to be eligible for bonding process, item must undergo a founding event per Legacy rules, this results in the "omen" feature of Legacy item (signature features of magic items from DMGII provide decent starting points) - note combined with the first feature this limits the volume of items that become eligible as once characters are using more powerful items during 'founding events' they won't qualify. - then powers and enhancements can be added through the rituals of bonding process. - one ritual can be used once character is at least 5th level, it must create an item that follows the Least Legacy 5th-10th level rules (e.g., 6 A abilities, or fewer B, C), but those powers are paid for in gp and xp normally under bonding rules and must also fit bonding rules (e.g., you would have to be 6th level to give an item a +2 enhancement bonus). At this point the item gains the Legacy item durability features and saves; if destroyed it can be recreated by bonding creator per Legacy rules. - similarly a 2nd ritual can be used once character at least 11th, to follow the Lesser Legacy 11th-16th rules (i.e., D, E, F suite). - a 3rd ritual can be used once character is at least 17th, to follow the greater legacy 17-20 rules (i.e., G, H, I). With these restrictions on what is created, the creation follows the bonding rules. It is balanced as a bonded item under those rules (a slight edge gained in increased durability of item; a slight cost in restricted choice of item features due to the menus). For anyone else, however, the item is a potential Legacy Item. Its base features those of the item prior to the first ritual. The Wielder Requirements are based on attributes of the item creator at 4th level (BAB, spell level access, a skill rank etc.) - 4th picked looking at the typical BAB and spell levels etc in requirements. A Personal Cost table is then assigned and the powers bonded distributed along the progression for the item (which they can be due to above limits). The item history to know to activate powers is based on the bonded creator and their history, item creator and history, founding event and subsequent history. The Rituals to activate Least, Lesser, Greater are also derived from the Bonding rituals and item history. This results in an item balanced under the Legacy rules. Comments? |
