I am currently happy owner a ring of spell storing (value 18 000 gc).
I'am thinking to uppgrade (or make my friend cleric to do it) my ring so, that it gives also same effect as ring of sustenance (2500 gc).

Is this possible by the rules and if yes, how should the price be calculated?

Thanks in advance!

Look at page 288 of the 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide. To quote:

Adding New Abilities: A creator can add new magical abilities to a magic item with no restrictions. The cost to do this is the same as if the item was not magical. Thus, a +1 longsword can be made into a +2 vorpal longsword with the cost to create it being equal to that of a +2 vorpal sword minus the cost of a +1 sword. If the item is one that occupies a specific place on a character's body (see Magic Items on the Body, page 214), the cost of adding any additional ability to that item increases by 50%. For example, if a character adds the power to confer Invisibility to her Ring of Protection +2, the cost of adding this ability is the same as for creating a Ring of Invisibility multiplied by 1.5.

So essentially what you'd have to do is multiply the cost of a Ring of Sustenance by 1.5, and that's what it's going to cost you to add the effect to your Ring of Spell Storing.

3750 gc. Not a bad deal.

Thanks!

Actually, it would cost you 1875 gp to add the effects of a Ring of Sustenance to a Ring of Spell Storing. Remember: The cost to create an item is half of the item's value. A Ring of Sustenance is valued at 2500 gp. Half of that is 1250. 1250x1.5 is 1875.

The same goes for the XP, however, and don't forget that cost. The XP is 1/25th (or .04) of the base price (which in this case is the same as the regular price in the Dungeon Master's Guide). So normally to make a Ring of Sustenance you'd have to pay 100 XP. So for adding the effects of a Ring of Sustenance to your Ring of Spell Storing, you're also going to have to pay 150 XP on top of the 1875 in gold.

Even so, that's certainly not a bad price to pay for a ring like that. Stay away from sticky-fingered Rogues, though, and above all else, be sure that your Dungeon Master is either using the Ring of Sustenance effect as written in the Dungeon Master's Guide, and as clarified by The Sage in this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=181783) link (I believe Skip's clarification is on the 3rd page of the thread), or that he's house-ruled it so that Wizards and Sorcerors can benefit more from it, as I think they ought to be able to do (and no, this isn't an invitation to rehash that thread; if someone has an issue with that topic, go to that thread please). If you're expecting your arcane caster to prepare spells after only 2 hours of rest with a Ring of Sustenance, and that's the primary reason you want the effect, you might be in for a rude awakening after you've spent the gold and XP if your Dungeon Master doesn't want the ring to work that way. :)
