I was have a mage who is currently thinking about combining spell effects of lower level spells to make new spells. I was wondering what level the new spell should be. I was also wondering if it would be possible to combine the effects of different schools.
The current example that I'm considering is combining mage armor and shield. Now since they are different schools is it possible? Also would the new spell "Arcane Regalia ?" be level 2 or level 3?

I believe their both armor bonuses, making them non-stakable, no? One way to do this is the arcane fusion series(complete mage, I believe). Otherwise, make the new spells case by case.
In the case of the arcane regalie spell, do not just add up the spell levels and make it level two, as greater mage armour (from memory here) is +6 at a level three spell slot, making the new one a 4th level spell.

If i understood correctly what you want, you are looking for a new spell replying the effects of two different [lower] spells.

If this is what you are looking for keep in mind that casting those two spells in the same round usually would require you to have the quicken feat and to use a spell 6 (or 4? i don't remember) slot higher.

Therefore I'd say then that for Armor + shield you need a too high slot to be of any use. There are definitely better way to be prepared...

Good point. Arcane fusion it is, then. Or maybe a rod of quickened metamagic? Though it is limited, you will only need lesser/normal ones for the uses you have in mind( I think). This will make it fairly affordable at mid~high levels.

Actually, there is a 2ed spell which does just this.:)
Check out the Cult of the Dragon module available for free download on the wotc site.

Is there actually a rod of quickened metamagic? that would be cool. Since activating magic items is a standard action I would be inclined to say no but if you know of one please share the source. My cleric my have a new item.

Thanks for the help. Basically I am trying to cut down on the number of spells I need to memorize. I am part of a very small party ( gnome psion "nomad", dwarven cleric, and me a human wizard). As there are only three of us each spell slot is very precious. Basically the spell I am trying to create is this.

Arcane Regalia
School: Help
Level: Help
Components: V,S,F
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 10 min / level

You recieve a +4 armor bonus. See mage armor.
You recieve three-quarters cover. See shield.

Arcane Focus: A miniature armored figure with a shield.

Is this spell feasible and what school and level would it be.
Thanks again for the input.

I would say level 3 ish or so mabey 4.

A better thing may be to pick up craft wands feat and make a low level wand of mage armor and then mem the shield spell or if you want to always be able to have both research a spell that gives you cast shield as a fast action, shields low duration will make it hard haveing it up when you need it unless you can cast the spell as an fast action.

With craft wand (lv5) you can make wands of a lot of spells that you cast a lot but dont nessairly need a high save with like haste or mage armor / shield.

The problem is that as there are only three of us in the party I can ,and have, been attacked rather quickly. I would rather spend 1 round to gain both effects than 2 rounds where the big bad nasty is trying to eat me.

Shield only gives cover in 3.0.
3.5 Shield gives +4 shield bonus to AC.

Combined with armor spell that is +8 AC which is nice.
