| Raynx01-26-07, 07:13 PM | Okay, officially, as in non-forum, straight-up, printed book, as of 3.0: How many different kinds of magic are there, and what are they? I am aware of Arcana, Divine, Incarnum, Psionics, Shadow, Pact, and Truename. I have been told that there is a "Blue Magic" book that was released under the radar which deals with some questionable magic of ill repute. I.E. "Touch of Exhaustion" which spell description reads as "the target becomes exhausted, due to an orgasm, no matter where the target was touched." Where I can see the humour in this... "You see a treasure chest. Through your extensive dungeoneering knowledge, you can tell its a mimic. It is open, and you can see actual gold inside." "I cast touch of exhaustion and true strike, then touch attack the mimic." "You have just invented the world's first slot machine, congratulations." ...I have a hard time believing that this book actually exists. Any confirmations? And remember the original question, too, please. |

| Milo HoBo01-26-07, 07:30 PM | Arcane (Wizard) Divine (Cleric) Incarnum (Totemist) Psionics (Psion) Shadow (Shadowcaster) Pact (Binder) Truename (Truenamer) Blade Magic* (Swordsage) Invoking (Warlock) Incantations (Unearthed Arcana, not class specific)* Spell-like Ability feats (Complete Arcane, not class specific)* These depend on your definition of either 'Magic' or 'System' |

Right now, you could, conceivably divide magic thusly: Spellcasters: I have no idea whether to distinguish them by the system they use (spellcasting), or by the nature of their abilities, so I'll use both methods for now. Divine (Cleric, Paladin) -Nature (Druid, Ranger) --Innate (None to date) -Innate (Favored Soul) Arcane (Wizard) -Innate (Sorcerer) --Bardic/Creative (Bard) Corrupt Sanctified Tainted Pact Soul Binding (Binder) Infernal Pact (Hellbred, Faustian Pacts, some flavors of Hexblade, Warlock (also can be considered an Innate Arcane class, however, part of the flavor states that some gain their powers via pacts with demons, devils or fey)) Truenaming (This can be viewed as a subcategory of Pact magic, or vis versa, as both rely upon directly using the Laws of the multiverse) (Truenamer, Dark Speech, Words of Creation, power word spells) Draconic (There's a wide array of classes that have to do with dragons - after so many, I think that they deserve their own category. Besides, they present a couple fairly unique mechanics of their own.) Aura (Dragon Shaman, Draconic Aura feat, some Dragonborn) Breath (Dragonfire Adept, some Dragonborn) Shadow (There's a huge array of shadow prestige classes, but few low level ways in - this might go into the arcane or spell magic better, but it is specifically not arcane or spell magic, so...) Shadow Magic (Shadowcaster, any spell with the shadow subschool) Shadow Manipulation (Dark Creatures, Shadow Creatures, Cloakers, Dark Ones, Shadar-kai; a wide array of prestige classes that I'll get around to listing one day) Soul Manipulation Incarnum (Incarnate, Soulborn, Totemist, Azurin, Duskling) Psionics (There's not really any subdivisions of Psionics out there, nor do they cross over with the other types all that often without explicitly saying so; given the wealth of material, I'm just going to list the base classes for now; Psion, Psychic Warrior, Soulknife (muffled laughing), Wilder, Lurk, Divine Mind, Ardent, Erudite) Dream (Okay, maybe one semi-applicable subdivision)(Dreamscapes from Heroes of Horror, Dreamtelling) Artifice (Artificer, Item Creation feats) The Sublime Way(Not exactly a kind of magic, though some uses are supernatural in origin) (Swordsage, Crusader, Warblade, Combat Form feats, Monk) I think that covers it - this is how I divide these things for my home campaign, for the most part (I separate Divine and Arcane entirely), and is by no means offical in the least. As to the 'Blue Magic' thing, Mongoose Publishing released a PDF by that name, filled with semi-humorous erotic content (I don't know if it was ever truly published, as no-one I know has a copy), there's also the Netbook of Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and, of course, the Book of Erotic Fantasy, by the Valar Project. |
