does any else thinks it odd that the top ten resoans to get complete arcane had all the orb spells dealing 15d6 but in the excerp had force orb doing a max of 10d6. I thought force orb was a terrible spell when i first saw it. I mean a 4th lvl spell that needed a ranged attack to hit and did 10d6 unlike the other orb spells and gave a fortitude save for half like the other orb spells. I was surprised to see it in complete arcane thus making it core but am dissapointed in seeing it not changed at all from its orginal version. Me being a big fan or force spells i fear i am going to have another heart break. At least i have chain missile from dragon#323 if only i could let my dm allow it
P.s. any yall know a way i could get my dm too allow that spell maybe show a poll of other dms that do allow that spell he says its real unbalneced.

chain missile isn't unbalanced.... you determine if a spell is unbalanced by looking at it and saying would I always choose x spell over other spells of that level... and the answer in chain missiles case is obviously no, there are situations (many situations) when it would be a better idea to take a different spell of the same level rather then chain missile. The spells in the Force Magic article (in dragon 323) were created with balance in mind.... I did include a few spells that I thought were pushing the envelope as far as balance was concerned, and those spells were cut in the editing process, however chain missile was not one of them.

as for force orb doing less damage then the other orbs...

A: it is not realy that similar, the other orbs deal energy damage, force orb deals force damage (froce is a discriptor, not an energy type). I can only think of 1 printed creature that resists or is immune to force damage.

B: Force orb doesn't suffer a 50% miss chance against incorporeal creatures, and can even effect creatures on the ethereal plane.

those two factors alone warrant the lower damage cap.

1) Complete Arcane is NOT core.

Core refers to the PHB, the DMG, the Monster Manual and any errata/FAQ for those books.

Anything else published by WoTC is called a WoTC Splat book. Most of it is reasonable, even though it is not core.

Anything else published by people besides WoTC is called Third Party Publishers, even if they licensed a world from WoTC. Most of it is far more powerfull than WoTC published stuff, even if it is Ravenloft.

2) Force effects are by definition more powerfull than elemental effects. No one has or can get Resistance to Force, Force effects incorporeal and Ethereal creatures.

There are two creatures I can think of off the top of my head that resist/are immune to force effects: Force Dragons (ELH) are immune, and Tarterian Dragons (Drac.) get a +4 bonus to their saves vs. force effects.
