lost_rich 12-12-04, 01:40 AM	hello i have been reading the Complete Arcane and, not being much of a mage player, have run across a confusing section. i hope somebody can clarify it for me... Page 72... sections: Caster Level Spellcasting Level Specific Spell Requirements i understand the basics of what they are trying to say, but they seem to say the opposite [especially Caster Level and Spellcasting Level]. can someone help me understand? thanks...
Shatteredtower 12-12-04, 02:40 AM	Caster level: A creature with spell-like abilities has a caster level for those abilities. The same is true for warlocks. This is, however, the level that's checked for effect durations and ranges, the ability to penetrate spell resistance, and other level-based variables. Spellcasting level: A creature's spell-like abilities do not grant it a spellcasting level. Spell-like abilities are not spells, and thus having fireball as a spell-like ability is not the same as being able to cast 3rd level spells. Specific Spell Requirements: If you can't use the specific spell mentioned, you don't meet the requirement. If the requirement is knock, for example, you don't meet the requirement just by virtue of being able to cast 2nd level spells or a having a caster level of 3 or higher. Knock must be on your list of known spells or spell-like abilities, and being able to use a meteor swarm at will won't change that. Does that help any?

The difference between caster lvl and spell casting lvl are HD and knowledge, as I see it. The other confusing part is how to apply the proper terms. The section is talking specifically about requirments for feats and PrC. If the prerequ is to be a 3rd lvl caster, you need 3 lvls in a casting class or the equivalent to for creatures If the prerequ is to be able to cast a 2nd lvl spell. The warlocks spell-like abilites are not the same as actually casting a 2nd lvl spell. They don't have the right knowledge. If the prerequ is to Know or able to cast darkness or another specific spell. Than it can come from either a spell-like ability or casting it. To change that just a little if it the prerequ is to be able to cast darkness. Than having it as a spell-like ability doesn't help you. I hope I didn't confuse you more, but thats the best I can do at 2:00am.
