| Stoneson10-17-06, 11:13 AM | This item seems overpriced to me. It basically allows you to cast a spell on the fly once a day. It has to be a spell in your spellbook, and the activation takes a full round, potentially a longer time than the spell to be cast. All this for 18000 GP? Opinions/Comparisons? Thanks, Paul |
| tarkin10-17-06, 12:25 PM | Any spell level? Even 9th? 18,000 seems right for something that will let you trade that ShapeChange for a Wish when you really need it, but did not want to memorize Wish when it would cost you 5,000 xp to cast. |
| Stoneson10-17-06, 12:36 PM | Yes, any level. But you cast the spell 'as though you had prepared it normally.' I'd read that to mean you still have to expend any XP or other costs related to the spell. |
| Puca10-17-06, 01:03 PM | You do. I think Tarkins point was that with such a high XP cost, Wish is a spell that you are going to use rarely, and with great discretion. Therefore, preparing it can be kind of a waste, as you will do everything possible to not have to cast it. But, a spell in your book and not in your head does no good to anyone if you suddenly find you really, really need Wish. This item lets you get it. The hardest part of playing a wizard is picking the right spells everyday from all those in your book. 18,000 for a high level wizard to "cheat" his biggest challenge doesnt seen overpriced to me. |
| tarkin10-17-06, 01:31 PM | That is exactly what I meant. No reasonable 17th level wizard is going to waste one of his few 9th level spell on a Wish unless he knows he is going to need it. Similar issues exist for many other spells, including: Freeedom Analyze Dweomer Legend Lore Nightmare Dream Remove Curse Water Breathing Nondetection Whispering Wind Locate Object Erase Identify Detect Secret Doors Detect Undead Endure Elements |
| IMarvinTPA10-17-06, 01:50 PM | Nondetection was a frequently used spell for me, it protected my Greater Invisibility spell and was very important. Analyze Dweomer was useful against enemy spell casters as well as quickly getting all the loot sorted out. And at 7th level spells, Limited Wish became a handy auto-heightened "I need THAT spell" spell. 300 xp got cheaper and cheaper... 9th level spells: Freedom 6th level spells (Limited Wishable): Analyze Dweomer Legend Lore 5th level spells: Nightmare Dream 4th level spells: Remove Curse 3rd level spells: Water Breathing Nondetection Scrolls or wands from here down are handy. 2nd level spells: Whispering Wind Locate Object 1st level spells: Erase Identify Detect Secret Doors Detect Undead Endure Elements |
| True Cavalier10-17-06, 01:58 PM | I just think that 18.000 might be too much for wizards that will never see the higher level spells. I can see a couple "lesser versions" that cost less and work on spell levels 0-3 and 0-6 respectively. That said, most mages would rather just keep some scrolls of spells they might need than use that amulet. :P Which makes purchasing that amulet redundant. Of course it would still be a nice find as DM-placed loot. |
| Veomyr10-17-06, 02:46 PM | True, but the amulet would be a one-time only purchase, while scrolls, even if cheap, still need to be written, requiring time and money (even if those are both in abundance) |

The reason I looked so closely at this item is that I've had a similar set of items in my notes for a while (and even called them Necklaces of Spell Conversion), and I had it set up as you say with more than one version covering different spell levels. Maybe because I don't think I've ever played or run a game that went past about 12th level the cost seems excessive, and the different versions would allow for a more reasonably priced version. I never came up with a cost for the items though. Obviously being able to cast on the fly is fairly valuable to a character, but it doesn't actually increase the spell slots available each day, or give the character access to a spell they don't already know. I still don't have a definite cost in mind...3-5k for 0-3, 10-12k for 4-6. I know the costs are kind of arbitrary, but feels better to me. Thanks for the input. Safe travels, Paul |
