| fables08-26-05, 11:26 PM | Can you hold items in your hand/s while casting spells? According to what I can find. In D&D v3.0 its pretty clear. In D&D v3.5 not so clear. I think that the rules state that if you are casting a spell with only verbal components, you can hold (not fight with) items/wpns in both hands. A spell with a somatic component requires you to have at least one hand free. A spell with material components doesn't require you to have your hands free, which seems odd to me. I can't find a rule anywhere that states you need to have a least one hand free to hold a material component when casting a spell that requires it. Assuming a character needs to have a hand free isn't good enough, i need to see/read the rule. also BladeSinger: A BladeSinger can weild one weapon while casting a spell. To me, wield means attack. therefore you could cast one spell and make a melee attack. cool class ability. what do you say? |

Bladesinger lets you hold a weapon and cast spells at the same time, not do both in a round. It basically lets you make somatic components with a sword-filled hand. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |

| fables08-28-05, 10:03 PM | Very well then. On page 174 of players handbook v3.5, under somatic component, it specifically states that you must have at least one hand free to provide a somatic somponent. Under material component, it doesn't say anything about having to hold the material component or focus. In the players handbook v3.0, same thing. So if a spell only has verbal or material components, you could hold two wpns in your hands, you wouldn't have to put your wpns away before casting some spells. Also if you happen to need a material component/focus to cast a spell and it happens to be near by, the spell caster can use it. Who knows what "nearby" would mean, maybe line of sight, I guess the distance of "nearby" would be up to the DM (maybe within the range of the spell). That opens up interesting possibilities. |
| fables08-28-05, 10:16 PM | As for the Blade Singer class, the latest version, starting on page 17 in the Complete Warriors Book. Under the class feature Lesser Spellsong, it states that when "wielding" a sword... cast defensively. Therefore you can attack and cast a spell in the same round. Also the Song of celerity class feature can only be used when "weildiing" a longsword/rapier. Therefore again, cast a spell and attack. "Wield" means to use. So players could have thier characters "use" swords in a number of ways, parry, attack, swing it over thier head, whatever they can think of. |
