| Donnavin Snowolf05-04-04, 02:51 PM | Recently I've heard alot of moaning about the spell Comprehend Languages. Its pretty interesting if you think about it, because of the utility its hard to confuse the PCs with any form of foriegn language. Decipher script is pretty hard to make useful with this spell dancing about too. So I thought I'd make a little revised version of Comprehend Languages. Comprehend Languages Divination Level: Brd 1, Clr 1, Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S, M/DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Personal Target: You Duration: 10 min./level You can understand the spoken words of creatures or read otherwise incomprehensible written messages. In either case, you must touch the creature or the writing. The ability to read does not necessarily impart insight into the material, merely its literal meaning. The spell enables you to understand or read a single language which you have some working knowledge of, not speak or write it. The language is chosen during the casting of the spell. Most racial languages are popular enough that the average caster is considered to have a working knowledge. Other languages can be determined by a DC 15 check of an appropriate Knowledge type. Religion for Celestial, Infernal, or Abyssal. Arcana for Draconic. The Planes for Auran, Aquan, Ignan, or Terran. Nature for Sylvan. Dungeoneering for Underdark, or Ancient History for an appropriate unknown language. A DC 20 Decipher Script check to understand a small phrase from an unknown language always grants working knowledge for a written language. The DC may be increased for unusual obscurity, usually by 5 or 10. Written material can be read at the rate of one page (250 words) per minute. Magical writing cannot be read, though the spell reveals that it is magical. This spell can be foiled by certain warding magic (such as the secret page and illusory script spells). It does not decipher codes or reveal messages concealed in otherwise normal text. Comprehend languages can be made permanent with a permanency spell. Arcane Material Component: A pinch of soot and a few grains of salt. |
