This is something that is long overdue. The rules in the PHB are just not detailed enough. For example, that crazy wizard that lives in undermountain has used a wish spell to give him permanent true seeing, according to the forgotten Realms Campaign setting. Where in the rules is that even an option without it being corrupted by a DM? I want to know what you guys allow in your campaigns with the versatile wish spell.

The problem with wish is that you can't really give comprehensive rules because its very nature is a "whatever you want" effect.

Now, there *is* a substantial problem with DMs who go out of their way to warp wishes in the most absurd ways possible, but that's a case of bad DMing.

The general thing to bear in mind is this: It's a 9th level spell which expends 5,000 XP. That's a huge price tag, and they ought to be able to get some substantial benefits out of it.

If they're asking for something which is patently unreasonable, then simply fulfill it as much as is reasonable. If they're asking for something reasonable, let them have it.

i'm thinking of using wishes to get some "supernatural abilities" that wouldn't be suppressed in an AMF. I'm thinking sort of like permanency, but instantaneous rather than permanent abilities so they couldn't be dispelled, because I'd be IRATE if some jerk NPC blew 5kexp for me with a simple dispel magic.

Would using a wish like that be overpowered, or no?

It is good to hear this. I always thought that this was the intent of wish (and I've been playing for 23 years). It just seems that DM's take it too literal from the book (not in the text. I will warp it). Even though I pointed out other examples in NPC's.

Now that's mean ;)

My wiz will be making one wish - expending 25Kxp on 5 wishes (she'll need to scribe scrolls to be able to do it in one sitting) for a +5 inherent bonus to int. It will knock her back two levels ... but it's worth it.

It'll cost you a bit more than 25Kxp.
You need the 5k for the wish you're making.
+10k for each wish scroll you're wishing for.
+306 for each 9th level scroll.
You get a grand total of 56,530 XP for your wish.

I agree with the words you used but came to the EXACT opposite conclusion.

It is a 9th level spell. That is all. They should not be able to do more than ANY other 9th level spell.

The price tag is small/tiny. Other 9th level spells are restricted to only one thing. The relatively small xp cost makes up for the power of diversity - of memorizing/learning just that one spell instead of having to learn/memorize the right spell for the task.

If someone asks you to do something, think, "Would I let them make a 9th level spell with no XP cost do this?" If the answer is yes, then it should be fine for Wish to do. If not, then well, you have your answer.

On another issue, I heartily recommend the Bureau 13 Wish rules.

"Using the word AND counts as attempting to make a 2nd wish".

Otherwise people could say things like "I wish for a pony and 25,000 gp and a house and a bonfire and to be healthy and..."

Guess I'd say 8th level, being that that is the guideline set by the spell description. I wouldn't let wish duplicate time stop or meteor storm, even with the XP cost.
