| Pyrate_Jib04-05-08, 12:38 AM | Can a spell caster keep concentration going on one spell and cast a second? Say you have a Mage who has cast Limited Wish to the effect of a Control Winds Spell (yeah I know it's a Druid Spell and he shouldn't be able to do it) and then wants to Teleport away from an attacking foe. Can he keep Control Winds going or will the spell drop off? |
| runestar04-05-08, 01:00 AM | You need to spend a standard action each round concentrating on said spell. If you teleported away, you will not be able to concentrate (since you have already spent a standard action, and are left with just a move and swift action), unless you somehow have 2 standard actions/round. There are a few ways around this. For example, there is a feat which lets you maintain concentration as a move or even swift action if you succeed at a concentration check. Or prepare a quickened teleport to cast as a swift action. So my answer to your question is yes and no, depending on whether you can muster enough actions to perform both in the same round or not. |
| Seeker9504-05-08, 10:39 AM | What runestar is saying is... Yes, if you are a choker. Otherwise, no. :tiphat: |
| Telulu04-05-08, 03:02 PM | What the other people have said is correct. In the games I run though, we have a houserule that says you can keep the concentration going if you can make a certain concentration check (generally it is 15+spell level + levels of other spells you are concetrating on). As you can see the dc can get pretty high pretty quickly, but it adds some awesome dramatic effect if you have control flames AND control air going :) (or other similar spells) We tend to houserule things like that to make the games more fun/dramatic rather than just do it RAW. |
| Seeker9504-05-08, 03:31 PM | I like Telulu's houserule. A lot, :tiphat: |
| Pyrate_Jib04-05-08, 04:00 PM | But only a certain "Feat" would allow you do cast a spell and concentrate on another? I like the house rule. Perhaps it might join our home campaign... |
| goram_browncoat04-05-08, 05:11 PM | Wasnt there a skilltrick in complete scoundrel that let you concentrate on a spell as a swift action? Sound like a sweet deal for a couple skillpoints |

Sound like a sweet deal for a couple skillpointsWell hoooly crap you're right. Definitely adding that to my character I'm working on. :D Edit: It still won't work because of this line: You can’t cast a spell while concentrating on another one. It's still a nice skill trick. You can do other things, just not cast spells. The only way I think you could cast a second spell legally is by passing the first to your familiar via the Familiar Concentration feat. I forget which book that's from. |
| runestar04-05-08, 07:23 PM | You can’t cast a spell while concentrating on another one. Sucks...completely overlooked that rule...:embarrass |
| wraithstrike04-05-08, 07:52 PM | A feat, extraordinary concentration might allow it. I don't remember exactly how it works, but I think it is in complete adventurer. |
| betrayor04-05-08, 08:10 PM | Well extraordinary concentration from complete adventurer lets you cast a spell while concentrating on another if you beat a concentration DC.Note that you can olny concentrate on one spell. |

| nasuma04-06-08, 02:36 AM | Am I missing something. Sonorous Hum from the Spell Compendium (all three types of casters get the spell)? Now, you would have to quicken it or prepare a round in advance for the spell. Also, you may lose some on the duration, but in general this spell does a good job with concentration spells (and you can cast more spells). |
| Wheldrake04-06-08, 06:45 AM | How about if you polymorph into a form that has more than one head? Zaphod Beeblebrox could probably do it, at least if he wasn't so wacky that concentrating on *anything* just isn't in the cards. Hydra... ettin... cerberus... chimera... Cheers, --- Wheldrake |

Cheers, --- Wheldrake I think multiple heads share one mind. I know that is not realistic, but it is one of those balance things. Otherwise you might have to cast 10 dominate monster spells to control one Hydra. The one dominate monster spell to control a hydra is a customer service ruling I asked them about a while back. |
| elonin04-07-08, 07:28 PM | This idea isn't practical for most arcane casters but the psion ability schism does what you are looking for. Then there is the belt of battle or quickened teleport. |

Also, you may lose some on the duration, but in general this spell does a good job with concentration spells (and you can cast more spells). Hum is my favorite spell for just that reason. I had a character cast it (quickened), then cast summon elemental monolith. It was great having a CR 18 beater that I didn't have to concentrate on. |
| bluedsteel04-07-08, 08:17 PM | Spirit Shamans gain the ability to have their (nonexistent to everyone else and therefore will not fail concentration checks) spirit guides maintain concentration on a spell for them. They can cast another. They don't have to, but they can. I think there's an arcane class that gains that ability in some supplement or other, but I don't remember which. Same idea as the familiar concentration thing, only better. Some monsters explicitly have a couple of minds, so they can cast twice. This doesn't include most multi-headed monsters, but they're out there. Symbionts may also permit multiple spells per round. |
| Kerelis04-08-08, 09:07 AM | I think it would be quite easy to have a feat like: Familiar Concentration Prerequisites: 5 ranks in Concentration, Summon Familiar Class ability or Acquire Familiar You may cast a spell that requires concentration to maintain and have your familiar take over concentration. Doing so initially requires a concentration check DC 15 + level of the spell at the time of casting. If check is successful, you may then take other actions, cast spells, etc. A familiar may not maintain concentration for you for more than 1 round per caster level. |
| Orenmir04-08-08, 11:19 AM | Schism (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/schism.htm) might be an option. Even though it's a psionic power. There's no reason you can't use your "second" mind to concentrate and/or cast spells. Attaining it is another story. [Edit] Sorry, I just noticed someone else already mentioned it. |

The prereqs are higher than what you list, and it works differently, though. It is from Lost Empires of Faerun. |
| Kerelis04-08-08, 02:16 PM | Thanks, for the info about the Lost Empires book. I've been wanting to get that, but just havn't gotten around to it. |
