| Halfred01-21-08, 02:07 PM | How do I determine the caster level for a spell cast from a Wand? For example, what is the Will Save for a Wand of Cause Fear? Thanks, --Confused |
| Zarith01-21-08, 02:21 PM | From the SRD Saving Throws Against Magic Item Powers Magic items produce spells or spell-like effects. For a saving throw against a spell or spell-like effect from a magic item, the DC is 10 + the level of the spell or effect + the ability modifier of the minimum ability score needed to cast that level of spell. Wand of Cause Fear 10+1(1st level spell) +0 (Ability score required for casting 1st level spells is 11, modifier is +0)=11 |
| Malek299101-21-08, 02:31 PM | The caster level of a wand would be the caster level chosen by the person who made the wand. The pricing of wands assume the minumum level to cast the spell in the wand. Example a 750 gp wand of cure light wounds has a CL of 1, while you could make a CL 3 wand of cure light wounds, but that would have a market price of 2250. The minumum CL for a wand is the min level you can cast the spell, the maximum is the creator's actual level. The save DC's as was posted by Zarith use the minumum ability score needed to cast a spell of that level. |

There is a feat that allows using your CL for crafting items (in epic level handbook I believe), but otherwise, the CL is equal to the minimum required to cast the spell. This is the KEY reason why staves are better than wands. Storme |

If you find a reference that supports your claim, I would like to see it. Warsaw |

Read this link: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wands.htm Check out these three entries in the table: Magic missile (1st) 750 gp Magic missile (3rd) 2,250 gp Magic missile (5th) 3,750 gp Fireball (5th) 11,250 gp Fireball (6th) 13,500 gp Fireball (8th) 18,000 gp Fireball (10th) 22,500 gp It is obvious that you can get wands of fireball with a CL of 10 rather than the default minimum CL of 5. You just have to pay more GP to buy them (or use up more GP and XP to craft them). Staves are better than wands because they use the *user's* CL rather than the crafter's, so you can buy or craft a standard staff and as you gain in CL the staff's CL grows with you. |
