| VooDoo711-18-06, 02:08 PM | Could someone *clearly* explain the rule for applying MORE than one metamagic feat to a spell for spontaneous casters. Please include book and page for reference to show the rest of my group. I have played for a very long time but seldon play casters and even rarer the spontaneous versions. The multitude of reference books (official WoTC only) are sketchy and confusing to the point of being useless sometimes. I love the feat system, yet I disapprove of the lack of continuity between the books. It seems when one book is created, noone on the design team bothers reading ansy of the previous ones. Any help here is unimaginably greatfull. |

All effects are applied only to the base spell. As for book and page reference, PHB page 88. 1 - You can. Heighten and Fortify being the examples... 2 - Entirely true. 3 - Debatable... Many would argue that Twin, Repeat spells are effectively X4. Anyhow, I believe the question was about how many can a Spontaneous Caster add to one spell, and how long would it take to cast... I'm not sure. I THINK you can apply as many as you want (assuming you have the spell slot), and it takes another round for each Metamagic beyond the first. So an Extended, Empowered, Maximised Melf's Acid Arrow (8th level spell slot, and a lousy one, at that...), would take 3 rounds to cast. But nowadays, most Sorcerers use one of the available methods to use Metamagic without extra time... |
| Yaeri11-18-06, 04:38 PM | There is a lot of debate on how multiple metamagic on the same spell interact with each other. One camp runs it like Seeker95, the other camp lets all metamagic stack, except empower and maximize. (As they are explicitly mentioned in the book not to stack. For camp 1 this is the general rule, for camp 2 its an explicitely mentioned exception to the rule) I think the faq rules it like camp 2. I rule it as such as well. But I'm not going to delve into arguments around that, for these discussions never get resolved. Perhaps this link will be useful: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=522167 Obviously, this thread starts out with one opinion, but if you read through it, both camps come to make their claims. As for spontaneous casters specifically, I assume the big question is what happens to the casting time of the spell... I don't know. I'm going to delve in my PHB because now I wanna know it too. |
| risner11-18-06, 05:06 PM | Spontaneous casting only takes 1 full round regardless of how many metamagic effects you stack on the spell. It only ever takes more than 1 full round when the spell takes longer than 1 full round to cast. |

| Seeker9511-18-06, 08:00 PM | Spontaneous casting only takes 1 full round regardless of how many metamagic effects you stack on the spell.Adding agreement here. Casting times are not "specific metamagic dependent". They are the result of the rpesence or absence of metamagic, period. |
