Confusion about the wording on metamagic rods [Archive] - Wizards Community

When it says it doesn't change the spell slot of the spell, what does that mean exactly??

I assume if I was using an Empowered Spell Rod and I wanted to cast a fireball I would cast it at a 5th level slot?

But if that was the case what would I memorize that morning? Would I use the rod in the morning when memorizing spells (to allowing memorizing a 3rd level spell in a 5th level slot) or use it when I cast the spell?

I'm all confused.

Thanks in advance.

It takes the 3rd level spell, in the 3rd level slot, and adds the Empower feat to it as it's being cast. In effect, the rod pays for the level bump for the metamagic, 3 times per day.

Sudden Empower, 3 times per day, in a stick.

Wow!!

That's is what I was hoping but I thought that would be too good.

Does everyone else agree?
