Okay, last night the party fighter and wizard both failed saves against confusion and both got the "attack nearest creature" result. They were standing right next to each other and the figher had his bow in hand and the wizard had his staff.

We decided that the fighter would take a 5' step and attack with the bow on his turn. On the wizard's turn I was going to have him cast a spell, but the player pointed out that the first possibility in the list, "attack caster with melee or ranged weapons (or close with caster if attack is not possible)" does not mention spells so the wizard should close and attack with his staff.

It seemed to make sense so we went with that. How would you have ruled? http://www.connected-moms.com/community/images/smiles/icon_huh.gif

01-10 is attack the caster of Confuse with melee or range.
71-100 is Attack nearest creature.

I'd say casting a spell on 71-100 is fine. If you want to house rule otherwise I'd have no problem with that either.

The wizard should have attacked with staff. But I'm not sure that fighter could have taken that 5' step.

Ditto.

The fighter is responding out of confusion. He would not make tactically wise decisions. The fighter mi9ght have dropped the bow and drawn his sword *or* started smacking the mage with the bow. He also might have just started firing from where he stood.

The wizard would have used his staff.

I think that'd be a little harsh.
The confusion is their target, not eliminating all their training and knowledge of tactics. It is after all Confusion and not Uttery Stupidity.

It is quite clearly against a wizards training to move into melee range and attack with his staff. Confusion leads to havok on the battlefield. IMO, what you would or wouldn't do in a normal situation shouldn't be a factor unles you roll "act normally."
