Just a quick clarification, specifically for Summon Nature's Ally.

Can the caster place the summoned animal anywhere within range (such as around corners into areas he cannot see) or must they appear within line of sight?

"You must designate the location where these things are to appear, either by seeing it or defining it. Range determines how far away an effect can appear, but if the effect is mobile it can move regardless of the spell’s range."

Would be the closest I've come to an answer but 'defining it' is pretty broad.

Thanks.

You have to have Line of Effect (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm#lineofEffect) (which is similar to Line of Sight):
You must have a clear line of effect to any target that you cast a spell on or to any space in which you wish to create an effect. You must have a clear line of effect to the point of origin of any spell you cast.
Into areas you cannot see? It depends.
Around corners? No.

Seeing = Line of Sight. Defining = Line of Effect. Around corners = neither.
