Most demons have a DR and an SR. In this case its DR 5/Cold Iron or Good with an SR of 14 (I think).

In last nights game, one of my players, a wizard, used a spell to drop stones on the head of a demon. I don't recall the name of the spell. He chose that spell, which is similar to Ice Storm but less damage, because there's no spell resistance, but he is also under the impression that damage reduction wouldn't apply. The part about the damage reduction is what I question. I realize the stones are conjured, but a stone is still a stone, or am I off on this?

The party was in danger of getting a rump-whippn', so I let him have his cake. But as the mages power grows, so too will the problem.

Does damage reduction help against powers that deal
slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning damage, such as crystal
shard (Expanded Psionics Handbook, page 89)?
Spells (and powers), spell-like abilities, and energy attacks
ignore damage reduction (Dungeon Master’s Guide, page 292).
Thus, even if a spell or power describes its damage as
bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing, it is still a spell (or power)
effect, and thus damage reduction does not apply (unless the
spell or power’s description specifically states otherwise).

So, in your case I would say, dr won't protect against that spell...

Well, there you go! Thanks dude.

I did look through the downloadable FAQ, but apparently I wasn't thorough enough...

But if you adhere to the RAW and not the RAI, he's correct.

The only time it would apply is if the spell is using a non-spell intermediary to inflict the damage. A summoned creature is the most common example, but something like Launch Bolt (which simply fires a crossbow bolt without a crossbow) will have to deal with DR (since it's an ordinary crossbow bolt hitting the target).

According to Complete Psionic pp79, it's no longer true, at least for psionics.
