I hope no CoC rules are being broken here, but...

Bolt of Conjuering is a spell I found in the Pocket Grimoire: Arcane published by Green Ronin. The Pocket Grimoire books are easily one of the best reference sets put out as they compile nearly every spell from all sorces put out up to the time of its publishing.

Anyway, the one down side of the books is that they don't specify where the spell first originated, so I don't know from which publishing co. BoC came from so I can't credit them.

Heres a break down of the spell though, and bare in mind that this spell was allowed during our 3.0 period, if that matters. We have since changed to 3.5...

BOLT OF CONJURING
Conjuration (Summoning)
LEVEL: Sor/Wiz 3
COMPONENTS: V, S
CASTING TIME: 1 Action
RANGE: Medium (100ft + 10ft/level)
TARGET: 1 Creature
DURATION: Instantanious
SAVING THROW: None
SPELL RESISTANCE: No

The caster fires a blast of magical force that strikes the target unerringly, inflicting 1d4 points of damage per caster level (maximum 10d4). Further, at the time of the striking, the bolt summons an outsider as if summon monster I had been cast. The summoned creature can act immediately upon arriving as described in summon monster I and remains for 1 round per caster level.

My DM allowed my wizard to take this spell, and from 5th through 10th level or so it was pretty handy. The lack of spell resistance made it very effective during a period of war with yuan-ti in our campagin, and the fact that it also summoned a creature afforded me the oppertunity of giving our rogue a flanker on many occasions. It never SEEMED particularly broken, and neither did this spell...

Durovar's Ripper Portal
Conjuration (Summoning)
LEVEL: Sor/Wiz 5
COMPONENTS: V, S
CASTING TIME: 1 Action
RANGE: Medium (100ft + 10ft/level)
TARGET: 1 Creature
DURATION: Instantaneous; 1 rd/level
SAVING THROW: None
SPELL RESISTANCE: No

As bolt of conjuring, but max damage is 15d4, and the monster called is from the summon monster III list.

This, meatier version of BoC, was offered up by JasperDM after reading my character diary, and my DM approved it as well.

To be honest, I never used Ripper Portal until last session, though it looked pretty in my spell book for several levels. I just had too many other, more effective 5th level spells that I prefered, and even Bolt of Conjuring gave way to high DC fireballs and lighting bolt.

Until... Last session I knew we were going up against a gang of Yugoloth, one of whom was particularly dangerous (minor BBEG), and all of whom had pretty tough spell resistance.

I had just turned 15th level, and took, for my feats, Quicken Spell and Maximize Spell.

In preperation for going against the Yugoloth, I decided to dust off the Bolt and the Ripper. I maxed a Ripper and Quickened a Bolt, and, after teleporting into the Yugoloth lair, I let them both rip at the head honcho.

I did 99 points. Auto hit, no save, so SR, in one round.

Even I was a little surprised!

So anyway, now I'm wondering just how balanced these spells are. The fact that they are automatic, nearly unresistable damage, makes me worry a bit. My DM and I have an understanding about non-core spells, and I don't want to take advantage of her.

I'm wondering if they shouldn't be treated as rays. At least that would give some miss chance.

To round things out, here are two more versions of the spell...

Jaspar's Violent Planar Anomoly
Conjuration (Summoning)
LEVEL: Sor/Wiz 7
COMPONENTS: V, S
CASTING TIME: 1 Action
RANGE: Medium (100ft + 10ft/level)
TARGET: 1 Creature
DURATION: Instantaneous; 1 rd/level
SAVING THROW: None
SPELL RESISTANCE: No

As bolt of conjuring, but max damage is 20d4, and the monster called is from the summon monster V list.

Seruac's Dimensional Death
Conjuration (Summoning)
LEVEL: Sor/Wiz 9
COMPONENTS: V, S
CASTING TIME: 1 Action
RANGE: Medium (100ft + 10ft/level)
TARGET: 1 Creature
DURATION: Instantaneous; 1 rd/level
SAVING THROW: None
SPELL RESISTANCE: No

As bolt of conjuring, but max damage is 25d4, and the monster called is from the summon monster VII list.

Both also submitted by DMJasper.

So i thought I'd get some opinions from the peanut gallery. TIA.

The bolt of conjuring is from The Book of Eldritch Might by Monte Cook.

There is a spell called bone arrow which according to a search on google gets me:

- Bone Arrow: An arrow made of bone flies out and strikes the target, and then morphs into a skeleton. (This appears to be a different version of Monte Cook's Bolt of Conjuring from the Book of Eldritch Might. However much like the Bolt of Conjuring, I have issue with an attack spell that doesn't allow a spell resistance roll and automatically hits with no save.)

Monte Cook has said---

===the SR entry should say something like "see below." The bolt itself gets SR, but the conjured creature does not. ====

Otherwise, Bolt of conjuring is like magic missile except it adds a summoned creature....

This spell isn't as good as a 3rd level magic missile spell would be following the spell design guidelines in the DMG from a purely damaging standpoint. That's what the conjuring part makes up for, which as an effect for a 3rd level spell, it's not much.
