Has anyone else noticed that this spell is broken like nobody does? No save, No SR, target can't move at all, 3d6 subdual per round, and the only way out is taking one minute for a DC 40 escape artist or a DC 32 strength check?

My party last night manhandled an old red because I cast this on him and he needed a natural 20 to break the spell, and he couldn't spend the time dispelling it because there were blade barriers being cast atop him simultaneous.

You could use the spell to shackle anyone who doesn't have a ranged weapon/spells and just kill them at your leisure. That seems a little overpowered to me, and i'm the one who's playing the cleric. =/

What source is this spell from? I certainly don't recognize it, unless you mean Animate Object with chains.

The spell is not broken IMO. Powerful, yes, but not broken.

First this is a Sanctified spell. Not just anyone can cast it, you need to be GOOD. It's more of a role-playing thing then anything, but you shure have to be GOOD.

So your Red Dragon example....your average old red has a strgenth of 35(+12) in the MM. The spells DC is 32, so breaking out can be tough.....but you forgot the Escape Artist skill. A old dragon could nicely have a +20 or +30 there...in just ranks alone. He'd pop out in no time.
The chains alos 'only' have (a max) of 100 hp. A dragon could claw/bite through that easy enuff.
Then you can always use magic to escape. The concentration check is not so high... Plenty of spells can get you way from the chains. Dimension Door, Gaseous Form, Teleport.....it's a good reason to have one of theas spells.

Thanks for the input. I wanted to try to ask from an unbiased point of view, but the rest of my party and my DM didn't like the spell very much. They think my cleric is already too powerful, with persistent divine power/favor and other things. I wish they understood I still have to use spell slots I would otherwise use for fire storms/earthquakes and powerful divinations, but oh well.

Could you give the spell's source, and the spell's level? I've never heard of this spell before. Is it Wizards material or 3rd-party?

Book of Exalted Deeds.

7th level spell, causes d2 Strength *drain* (i.e. doesn't come back without magical assistance) to the *caster* when cast.

On the other hand, any Good cleric can spontaneously cast it without having to prepare it.

Also, please realize this spell is on the same power level as Resurrection and Destruction, and beyond Harm and Disintegrate.
