| SerpentMage01-29-05, 07:04 AM | Construction Domain: Granted Power: Casts Transmutation spells at +1 caster level Domain Spells: 1 - Repair Light Damage (Tome and Blood) 2 - Repair Moderate Damage (T&B) 3 - Repair Serious Damage (T&B) 4 - Repair Critical Damage (T&B) 5 - Fabricate (PHB) 6 - Wall of Stone (PHB) 7 - *Reconstruction (see note) 8 - Polymorph Any Object (PHB) 9 - ? *Note: http://www.sulerin.com/spells/detail.asp?spell=Reconstruction I tried to stay consistent with a theme (all spells in the school of Transmutation; all spells having Instantaneous Duration or something similar), but I ran into a snag at level 6 and level 9. At level 6 I could satisfy one or the other of the two criteria of the theme, but not both (and Wall of Stone seemed to fit the theme better than something from Transmutation like Animate Object). I am totally stumped at level 9 (Genesis from Deities and Demigods would be interesting, but that doesn't really seem to fit the idea). P.S. - The original impetus for creating this domain was to have something that catered to clerics that worked closely with constructs or to actual constructs with access to cleric spells (seemed easier to simply create a cleric domain than to create a construct version of a cleric with the repair spells in the spell list, plus this has greater utility overall from a campaign standpoint). Any ideas? Thoughts, criticisms, comments? |
| Da Dinictus01-29-05, 07:09 AM | Perhaps a summon spell to get a magical golem-like creature into combat? I'll have a looksy into some books first, I'll hit you back in a bit. Interesting domain, that's for certain :) |
| Nom01-29-05, 07:43 AM | Personally, I'd nudge polymorph any object to level 9. It's not really a clerical specialty, so it's not completely inappropriate to nudge it a level. That said, Trickery does have it at 8. Though I think your domain is going in two directions at once. Is it focused on Constructs, or on Transformation? (Side note: Eberron Campaign Setting has an Artifice domain) I don't see that "Duration: Instantaneous" is a particularly Construct-focused property. I would have thought that the obvious 6th level spell was animate objects (currently Brd6, Chaos6, Clr6). As for other spells, ironwood is of a similar style to fabricate, and you might also consider stoneskin or iron body (though they're not really construction related). If you're talking Transformation, there are also stone to flesh and flest to stone, and the transmute ... spells. |

That said, Trickery does have it at 8. Considering the dubious usefulness of the other spells on the list, I don't think that it is inappropriate to leave PAO at level 8. There are far, far better Domain Spell lists, after all. Though I think your domain is going in two directions at once. Is it focused on Constructs, or on Transformation? (Side note: Eberron Campaign Setting has an Artifice domain) I don't see that "Duration: Instantaneous" is a particularly Construct-focused property. If you're talking Transformation, there are also stone to flesh and flest to stone, and the transmute ... spells. The idea is to make it a spell list that is useful/geared for clerics that deal with constructs (and by deal, I don't mean "destroy") or for those constructs that might have access to clerical magic themselves. The Transmutation/Instantaneous framework is just another way of tying it all together (increased internal consistency between spells and the granted power). I considered Animate Objects, but ultimately decided that it really didn't bring anything extra for a cleric specializing in this narrow area (whereas Fabricate had some actual utility, what with it not normally being on the Cleric Spell List). EDIT for Clarity: the idea is to have the list contain spells that help in the maintenance and care of constructs (primarily), with as little deviation from that idea as possible (it's about upkeep, as opposed to creation). P.S. - I don't have access to the Eberron Campaign Setting, so I have no idea what the Artifice Domain is like, but I'd be surprised if it contained the first 4 spells on my list (I could be wrong, though) and those are fairly crucial in terms of my intended purpose. |
| SerpentMage01-29-05, 02:52 PM | So, no additional thoughts on whether the domain could use some work (obviously aside from the absence of a spell in the 9th lvl slot)? |
| KP9101-29-05, 08:43 PM | The artifice domain is more varied. Perhaps mending as a spell or (from Eberron) Magecraft-you gain a +5 bonus to craft checks for 1 day. P.S. Artifice: You gain +4 to craft checks. You cast creation spells at +1 caster level. 1.Animate Rope 2.Wood Shape 3.Stone Shape 4.Minor Creation 5.Fabricate 6.Major Creation 7.Hardening* 8.True Creation* 9.Prismatic Sphere Hardening-For every 2 caster level the target[object] gains 1 hardness. True Creation-As Major Creation, except can't be dispelled. XP cost of gold cost or 1. |
| Bloodtide_the_Red01-30-05, 02:07 PM | Well, for 6th level you are missing the next logical Healing Magic Step, Heal. Just make it Total Repair, as Heal, but for Constructs. And then for the 9th level one, you can go with the easy Total Repair Mass(as per Heal, Mass). BT |
| Nom01-30-05, 05:49 PM | My thoughts exactly, Bloodtide. Just copy the Healing domain, but convert the spells to 'construct' versions. But I'm a little leery about the +1 transmutation CL. Most domain CL bonuses (alignment domains, healing) affect only spells with that domain's descriptor. Death domain does affect all necromancy spells, but necromancy is a significantly weaker and smaller school than transmutation, and it sorta fits. The problem with +1 transmutaion is that you have provided +1 CL to a large number of buffing spells, none of which are related to your domain. |
| amichius03-03-05, 01:38 PM | Repair: Domain spells added to clerical spell list- By taking this domain cleric replaces the ability to replace spells with heals to replacing spells with repairs 1 - Repair Light Damage 2 - Repair Moderate Damage 3 - Repair Serious Damage 4 - Repair Critical Damage 5 - Repair Light Damage,Mass 6 - Repair Moderate Damage,Mass 7 - Repair Serious Damage,Mass 8 - Repair Critical Damage,Mass 9 - Total Repair Only true change I made was moving total repair all the way to 9th and just using the mass versions for the rest of the levels. Have a 5 person group with 4 warforged(monk, warrior, warlock, artificer ) and 1 halfling cleric of house jorasco and using this domain healing has been no problem. Amichius |
