| HeWhoIs05-11-07, 06:29 PM | I have some questions. First, is it possible for somebody else to build the body, and then the character puts the spells in? Second, is it possible to substitute a scroll for a spell when creating a construct? Thanks. |

Only 1 person needs to have the relevant feat, but multiple people can partake in the item creation process. But I am not sure who pays the xp creation cost though. Second, is it possible to substitute a scroll for a spell when creating a construct? Aye to that as well.:) |
| SD05-12-07, 12:37 AM | Here's the thing. Crafting constructs generally takes the same methods as crating magic items. In the DMG, each magic item category (armor, rings, etc.) also says that you use the required spells every day during casting. Thus, a scroll wouldn't work -- you'd need one scroll for each day of crafting, which is one scroll for each 1000gp of the cost. Do the same rules apply for crafting constructs? It could be argued that by RAW, since crafting constructs isn't specifically listed with this requirement, it is not subject to it. It could be argued also that since making a construct follows the same format as making a magic items (same list of requirements after their entry, same sort of feat description and type and requirements, same time spent, same XP spent), they should be treated like other magic items. I err on the side of requiring the spell every day, but I can't find a definitive answer in the errata or FAQ and I'm terribly lazy, so I'm going to bed now. |
| dragynson105-12-07, 01:07 AM | it is actually easier to create manuals of golem crafting than it is to craft the construct itself. once the manual is made, the golem can be made from any adequete craft dc and gp value stone or iron statue. ( Steal the one in the town square or one you find in a dungeon) and the golem can be activated in just a few rounds after youve created the manual and found a suitable statue. I have a warlock that is playing in the shackled city campaign, i havent created a golem yet but when i hit 12th level i have 3 stone statues and one of metal all of suitable quality waiting. MY dm didnt figure out what i was doing until after i had asked him about the statues and established they were good enough to use. One of the other players figured it out and blurted it out at the table. So the last couple weve run across have been of much lower quailty. You end up losing several hundred more exp per golem but you save about 100000 gp on each one too |
