It basically let's you absorbe the knowledge in a book at an amazing speed (during which the book turns to dust). Duration was loooong 1 round + 1 turn / lvl (calculates to 10 min + 1 min/lvl). You could absorb about 1 book (200 pages) per round. You couldn't do it with scrolls or spells (or any magical text for that matter) and your memory of this knowledge was in no way better than reading the book. So basically you 'read' the books at amazing speed an destroyed them afterwards....now....my point is.....I can't seem to grasp the level they put it at then.....it was a 7th level spell!!! The reason I'm asking is, I'm thinking of converting it to 3.5..... Any thoughts on this would be appreciated :) |

The only time its really useful is if you happen to have/find a book that you don't know what it is, and on a whim decided to read and then destroy it. or if you feel like :censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored::censored::censored: off a liberian. |

Personally i would think as a 7th level spell, it would work on spellbooks, and allow you to consume all spells in it into your mind for like 1hour/lvl, and then rapidly scribe them into your spellbook at 1min/spell level. Or possibly allow you to consume books on a particular knowledge at a rate of a +1 competancy modifier to the skill per book consumed, up to a max of +5 EVER. But heh, thats just ideas on why it could be a 7th level spell. . . . and im a slight bit wonky in the head today i think, so if im way off just ignore me :) |
| TheGogmagog03-27-04, 07:30 PM | The question would be what the 3.5 effect of reading a book would be. Do you gain a rank in some skill for reading it? I wouldn't think so, but would be great (but unnessesary) background for someone who was putting points into a knowlege skill. As a second level spell (or any level spell) I would not allow it to create knowlege skill points. It would just be flavor, you had read a book, but wouldn't be able to recall the table page 101. As maybe a fourth level spell and 1,000 exp it might create a knowlege skill point (not to exceed normal max). |
| Natalis03-28-04, 05:05 AM | :) you'd think that it would add some skill or proficiency....being a 7th level spell and all... here's the spell in all it's glory : Consume Knowledge (Alteration, Divination) Level: 7 Range: 0 Components: V,S Casting time: 1rd. Duration: 1 turn + 1rd./level Area of effect: The caster Saving Throw: None The powerful Consume Knowledge is useful to wizards needing information quickly. It allows the to absorb instantly the contents of a book scroll or similar medium for written knowledge. Such knowledge can be absorbed at a rate of one book per round (about 200 pages). However, the dweomer that allows a wizard to absorb information so quickly physically destroys the book or other record in the process. Nothing short of a wish will restore the consumed writing. Consume Knowledge will not help wizards memorize spells. Further, magical books, tomes and librams are immune to its power. The spell does not allow the caster to gain any proficiencies more quickly then their normal level advancement allows - the quick consumption of information cannot take the place of practise when gaining skills. This spell does not grant perfect recall. The facts learned via this spell are subject to memory loss, fact distortion and misremembering as information learned normally. Notes: Rare spell So there you have it....you gained no proficiencies (2nd edition equivalent of skills) and could't absorb magicl writing.... Thnx anyway for the feedback thus far.... |
