So I'm playing a 10th level wizard with contact other plane and would like to use it. With an INT mod of +7 I figure my chances are good to avoid the INT decrease, but what if I fail?

Avoid Int/Cha Decrease: You must succeed on an Intelligence check against this DC to avoid a decrease in Intelligence and Charisma. If the check fails, your Intelligence and Charisma scores each fall to 8 for the stated duration, and you become unable to cast arcane spells

It says 'decrease', not ability drain or ability damage, so how can I have this condition removed? I'm figuring greater restoration would work, but we have no access to that without returning to the next city. Is a standard restoration up to the task?

Greater restoration also dispels all magical effects penalizing the creature’s abilities ...
Restoration cures all temporary ability damage, and it restores all points permanently drained from a single ability score ...

What do you think?

Technically, there is nothing you can do. As you said -- it is neither drain nor damage.
Personally, in my game, I'd allow restoration to work.

My suggestion is to send your familiar to ask the questions instead (because it's a personal range spell, and you can therefore cast it on your familiar as a touch spell). Chances are he loses almost nothing, while you're totally stuffed if you fail.

And for the record - nothing except enhancement bonuses to intelligence will fix the problem, and even if you DO fix the lowered attributes, you still can't cast spells.

I swear - it's almost like they don't WANT wizards to be able to find things out.

Cast permanancy to make the mind affect permanent if your DM lets you, then cast restoration if you can. If the Dm doesn't allow resteration to work you could try this.
Or instead of this: :teach: risk looking like this:

If you already suffered the intelligence drop, how are you planning to cast spells?

If you can restore the damage, there's no drawback to it at all. "I ask a greater deity about XXX. Oh I fail, gimme some restoration, I'll try again soon." It's a really powerful spell, effectively allowing you to ask for what you want. The drawback for failure is nasty. To me, this is not a dungeon spell, this is a spell to cast when you're at home researching about the next adventure (for example). However, having said that, it could be a little less severe. I've had two wizards taken out for weeks with this crazy spell, however, when it worked, I discovered the location of a powerful artifact and the greatest weakness of our nemesis. So, imo, it's fine.

contact other plane is a crap spell.

even a greater god give stypid answers almost 10% of the time.

let priests do the communes etc, wait until you have legend lore and stuff.

Spoken in the words of a true wordsmith...and if you don't have a cleric who wants to burn XP? If a greater god gives stupid answers 10% of the time, he gives good, accurate answers 90% of the time. If you read the spell description carefully, Contact Other Plane is more flexible. Commune gives you yes, no or irrelevent. CoP gives you any one (or more, it's vague) word answer. "What is the password to this lock?" "What is BBEG's greatest weakness?" Open questions are far better than closed ones. Commune gives you twice as many questions, but can be cut off arbitrarily. I would say CoP has the edge. If you allow restoration to fix the INT hit, then it's clearly better.

Whine whine whine. :raincloud

The stats are dropped for the duration of the spell.
End the spell.
End the drop in stats.

The stats are decreased for the duration stated, IE 1-5 weeks.

Also it says nothing about special ways to remove the effect (like 'only a limited wish can ...'). I would therefore assume that the normal rules for removing such effects apply.

What about break enchantment?

Would it be possible to take a 10 on the Intelligence check? If so, then once I have a 22 Intelligence I can ask questions of a greater deity without worrying about ill consequences. My personal opinion is no, since it would be pointless to have a plane with a DC7 intelligence check. However, without such a measure even the mightiest of wizard potentially risks disastrous consequences for what shouldn't be that difficult of a task. I suppose I could always go with the DC7 plane, but the rate there is so poor that is worthless to ask any questions at all since your chances of getting a correct answer aren't any better than being lied to. My poor poor diviner...
