| Freedom06-29-04, 12:57 PM | Sorry if this has been asked or posted before, I tried to use the search feature of the boards but it was not working. Can the Contagion spell be used to inflict different diseases than the one listed in the spell description? Or is there perhaps another spell a caster can use to inflict diseases from other supplements? If so, what are the guidelines of what diseases can and cannot be induced by this spell? Any official input on this subject would be awesome, but all feedback will be helpful, thanks. |

The only thing i can say it's that you can't use Contagion to inflict Sup diseases,as stated in the BoVD. |

However, I would be disinclined to allow this from the single spell. Instead, I would allow the spell to be "metamagic" shifted up to cause more powerful diseases, or researched otherwise to cause different diseases. If you want something with a higher DC than the existing spell, then you have to cast it from a different slot. (I would not require a Feat for this. Just prepare the spell at a ghigher slot.) If you want it to inflict a different kind of disease (different damage tpye), then research a new spell. |
| Freedom06-29-04, 04:07 PM | I checked my BoVD and I couldn't find a reference to the Contagion spell in diseases section. Do you have a page number handy? What about other diseases that aren't supernatural? |
| Bloodtide_the_Red06-30-04, 12:36 AM | ........Can the Contagion spell be used to inflict different diseases than the one listed in the spell description? By the book, no. ..........If so, what are the guidelines of what diseases can and cannot be induced by this spell? This is the tricky part. The spell already covers damage to all six abilites. So you have the option of other effects(Gork Slime causes speed to be reduced by 10 feet) or just moving around the numbers. Other effects would be non-core, as all the core ones just do ability damage. And you'd have tricky blance problems..is -10 speed 'until cured' equal to 1-6 strgenth damage? And just moving the numbers? Like Hearing sickness DC 16 Damage 1d4 dex or Styx Stiffbess Dc13 damage 1d8 strgenth? Guess you could squize a point or two of diffrent damage out of it. BT |

Although it would make sense with heighten spell as well, and is probably a good enough limiter to prevent its use all the time From the SRD: Effects of Metamagic Feats on a Spell: In all ways, a metamagic spell operates at its original spell level, even though it is prepared and cast as a higher-level spell. Saving throw modifications are not changed unless stated otherwise in the feat description. If you don't use Heighten Spell, the spell will work as it was casted at his normal level. |

If you allow it to be cast "more powerfully" in a higher slot, then it is up to the DM as to the effects. The question is "how do you get contagion to cast more powerful diseases?" Heighten spell is possibly one answer, except that there is nothing to heighten. |
| smrtgmp06-30-04, 08:03 AM | Isnt raising the DC of saves and overcoming SR the only things that heighten is good for? Or am I missing something? |
| Egres06-30-04, 08:49 AM | Originally posted by smrtgmp Isnt raising the DC of saves and overcoming SR the only things that heighten is good for? Or am I missing something? It's useful even against spells like Globe of Invulnerability. |
| stlthmnky06-30-04, 12:11 PM | once, I cast contaigon on an ogre, giving him Manic Depression, and he got sick of life and killed himself. |
| Freedom06-30-04, 01:18 PM | What about using Bestow Curse or Bestow Greater Curse to infect somebody with worse or different diseases? I'm not sure there is a disease bad enough to warrant a casting of Bestow Greater Curse, but it seems to me like you should be able to 'curse' somebody with a wasting illness of some sort. What do you guys think? |
| Bloodtide_the_Red06-30-04, 10:25 PM | ..........What about using Bestow Curse or Bestow Greater Curse to infect somebody with worse or different diseases Yes, I'd say that's a good evil use for thoes spells. .........I'm not sure there is a disease bad enough to warrant a casting of Bestow Greater Curse Well maybe not a worse disease.......but how about a one that spreads by touch. Have the curse spread.... And I'd let a Greater Curse bestow supernatural diseases. The Complete Divine book has a 7th level diseases causing spell, Scourge. BT |
