| JellyPooga04-30-07, 08:09 AM | I don't have my books on me at the mo and just had an idea, but can't remember the details I need to. In Complete Arcane (I think) there's rules for Crafting a Contigency or Contingent Spell or some-such. Basically a non-slotted item that casts a spell once when a parameter is met. My question is this: Can you Craft a Contingent Reincarnate or Resurrection to activate "When I die"? Or do those Contingent things automatically stop working when you're dead or something (thus negating the parameter)? It's not actually for a character I'm planning or anything, just a query. |
| penchant04-30-07, 09:31 AM | Contingent spells stay until activated or dispelled. The book makes specific reference about spells going off on corpses hundreds of years after the fact. So yes, contingent resurrection is viable and a good idea. |

| Yusari04-30-07, 02:51 PM | now, if only there were a way to make the psionic revivify power into a contingent effect... we could even avoid level loss... *ponders* a psionic version of contingent spells... *wanders off to create a home-brew item* |
| penchant05-01-07, 01:24 AM | What's even handier is that you can have one contingent spell PER HIT DIE! Beats the hell out of contingency. I wonder if you can make spells contingent based upon how many times you die? "OK, this contingent true resurrection is for the first time I die, this one is for the second time I die, this one..." Of course, the command word contingencies (all tied to the same command word) are a great tactic, though expensive to pull off. |

My players loved it until they discovered how easy it was to get rid of the contingent spells: they can be dispelled by a dispel magic and the dispel check is against the contingent spell's caster level. As a side note, there is a spell called Death Pact (Spell Compendium) that kind of does what you want, except it's cheaper and doesn't cost you a level. |

There is also a Psionic Contingency power. |

If so, wouldnt they then follow the rules for items when subjected to Dispel Magic, i.e. merely suppressed for a short time? |

I think you are correct. it is a craft feat, takes gold and XP and is permanent until used. Therefore it follows item rules! Definitely better than contingency spell, and the various pacts even since those are spells. Good work Puca! :cookie: |
| ArcTan05-02-07, 04:34 AM | MIC says that Craft feats should be treated as magic/psionic transparent when possible. |
| Zaistars6905-02-07, 11:25 AM | spells put on contingency don't count as items. they can be dispelled with a dispel magic just like a normal contingency. It's on page 139 of complete arcane second to last paragraph of the contingency section. This really makes it poor enough that I would almost never use it. If it did work like an item so dispel would not be able to completely get rid of it it would be worth a feat and a massive amount of gold and xp. |
