| lukelightning05-14-07, 12:29 PM | What are some good spells to use with contingency for a 12th-level wizard? I was planning on dimension door but the fact that you have to define the parameters of that spell upon casting (i.e. "send me 100 feet North if I'm grappled") means that you've got a good chance to end up in a wall or other undesirable place. Other ideas I had was false life if severely damaged or mirror image if struck in melee. |
| Muktar05-14-07, 12:51 PM | Majic Jar if reduced to -7hp or less |
| Seeker9505-14-07, 12:52 PM | the fact that you have to define the parameters of that spell upon casting (i.e. "send me 100 feet North if I'm grappled") means that you've got a good chance to end up in a wall or other undesirable place. Not a problem. Dimension DoorIf you arrive in a place that is already occupied by a solid body, you and each creature traveling with you take 1d6 points of damage and are shunted to a random open space on a suitable surface within 100 feet of the intended location. As long as you are willing to take the 1d6 damage risk, this will work just fine. it gets you out of the grapple, and about 100 feet away. 1d6 damage is a risk, not a guarantee. And well worth getting out of a grapple. :D |
| lukelightning05-14-07, 12:55 PM | Majic Jar if reduced to -7hp or less To me that sounds like you're just extending your life by 1hour/level, then you're dead. You go down to -7 hp...magic jar something..your body lies there and bleeds to death....after the magic jar expires your soul has nowhere to go except to the great beyond. I guess that is better than dying...trouble is you need to be a 15th level caster for this. |
| tarkin05-14-07, 01:02 PM | Offensive version: Mnemonic Enhancer Defensive versions: Greater Invisibility |
| Muktar05-14-07, 02:09 PM | Contingency: TP to home at 0hp or less |
| The_Basilisk05-14-07, 02:19 PM | Contingency: TP to home at 0hp or less See, I wouldn't do that. What if your adventuring really far away? You tp to home at 0 hp, whereas your cleric or anyone with a healing wand or potion could get you up and running in no time. But I suppose it's not a big prob if you can tp back to your party in reasonable time. Always have that greater teleport memorized! How about: Meteor Swarm centered on you upon your death. That'll show them!! Better not tell your party about that one :) |
| lukelightning05-14-07, 02:26 PM | How about: Meteor Swarm centered on you upon your death. That'll show them!! Better not tell your party about that one :) I don't think this works; you can only use spells that "affects your person" and I think the fact that spells like meteor swarm have a effect like a burst disqualify them. |
| The_Basilisk05-14-07, 02:59 PM | I don't think this works; you can only use spells that "affects your person" and I think the fact that spells like meteor swarm have a effect like a burst disqualify them. Darn, that's no fun :D I got the idea from some crazy runeword Item from Diablo II that would cast a lvl 90 meteor on your body if you died. It also casted a lvl 30 blaze if you leveled up, lol. |
| CantripN05-14-07, 03:17 PM | I tend to use Resiliant Sphere on myself when badly hurt. |
| lukelightning05-14-07, 03:20 PM | I tend to use Resiliant Sphere on myself when badly hurt. I'd worry that the sphere would include whatever is pounding on me and I'd get locked in an impenitrable sphere with a killer. |
| CantripN05-14-07, 03:26 PM | I'd worry that the sphere would include whatever is pounding on me and I'd get locked in an impenetrable sphere with a killer. In which case I'd DD outside and leave him stranded... |
| mvincent05-14-07, 06:08 PM | I tend to use Resiliant Sphere on myself when badly hurt.It seems like this would seal your doom when below 0 hit points. (i.e. who's going to stabilize you?) |
| lukelightning05-15-07, 09:08 AM | Ah-HAH! I just thought of blink! A perfect spell for getting out of grapples/webs/purple worm tummies. |
| JWT05-15-07, 10:15 AM | How about: Meteor Swarm centered on you upon your death. That'll show them!! Better not tell your party about that one Or better yet, DO tell them - even if you don't have such a contingency. I bet that Cleric will very eager to keep you up and in the tussle. |
| lukelightning05-15-07, 10:27 AM | You do know, of course, that the highest level spell you can use with contingency is sixth. So no meteor swarms no matter what. |
| JWT05-15-07, 10:36 AM | You do know, of course, that the highest level spell you can use with contingency is sixth. So no meteor swarms no matter what. I know that - but the other player's maybe not! |
| penchant05-15-07, 12:41 PM | Break Enchantment is really good for a contingency since it fixes LOTS of stuff that you can't fix on yourself like balefule polymorph, flesh to stone, a curse that leaves your spell casting stat too low to cast anything, etc. Tenser's Transformation if you are rendered unable to cast spells. That's two big ones. |
| Trondant05-15-07, 12:51 PM | I've used gaseous form for when i'm on 1/3 hp or less. |
| CantripN05-15-07, 12:54 PM | I've used gaseous form for when i'm on 1/3 hp or less. I used to do this in 2ed. In 3.5, however, that might well harm you, as it negates much of your defence, and DR 10/magic is lame. |
| lukelightning05-15-07, 01:08 PM | I've used gaseous form for when i'm on 1/3 hp or less. Expect to be chased by stake-wielding villagers tossing holy water at you.:D |
| holylink71805-15-07, 03:07 PM | I like to use Stoneskin and set the trigger as "If I'm attacked without a Stoneskin already cast." Not the best, but not to shabby either. Although I like the Break Enchantment idea. I'll have to try it. |
| malignor05-15-07, 05:05 PM | "When I take real damage (as in beyond temp hipoints) from an attacker, summon 1d3 fiendish dire weasels around the foe who struck me." Hello Con point drain! Don't forget to have a Vampiric Touch in your list, so if you need to heal you can drain your own summons. = = = = = = "When I take real damage (as in beyond temp hipoints) from an attacker, Polymorph me into a 12HD dragon (medium; flight, +11 natural AC, still able to cast spells)." Don't forget you heal your 12hp. |
| Hidden05-15-07, 06:02 PM | I think you can use a Maximized spell with Contingency, right? So, Maximized Ray of Enfeeblement on who ever is grappling you .... Wait, no, Contingency only works with spells that target you. Oh well. For Contingency in general, I like to either use Brake Enchantment, Teleport (to a friendly local temple) or, for multi classers, Heal. The real trick is setting the thing up to go off when you want it to. |
| Seeker9505-15-07, 08:38 PM | So, Maximized Ray of Enfeeblement on who ever is grappling you .... Wait, no, Contingency only works with spells that target you. Oh well.Same grapple. Vampiric touch or ghoul touch or chill touch. |
| penchant05-16-07, 12:13 AM | Fire shield is good too, for grapples. babau slime is a spell that makes your skin acidic. Freedom of Movement if you aren't into grapple deterrent. I think blink allows you to get out of grapples too since you are incorporeal for part of the time. |
| sineous blackspell05-16-07, 01:28 AM | if you got access to a ring of spell storing and someone to cast 4 u heal is best if you want most useful overall id say polymorph then you can do what ya like i used to use contingent/heal chain contingency-teleport and contingency heal to reset primary contingency |
| Dioxin05-16-07, 04:38 AM | Craft Contingent Spell "Wraithstrike" + Staff/Runestaff of Power + high BAB bruiser with Power Attack and one level of Wizard (or some means of using spell trigger items) = increasingly silly massive amounts of damage the higher level and better buffed the bruiser. Craft Contingent Spell is also extremely nasty since you can wear multiple contingent Wraithstrikes and set the trigger conditions to go off one at a time. The key here is Power Attack's double damage bonuses for using a two handed weapon getting doubled again by the staff. Sending enemies into cardiac arrest by massive damage is always fun. The trick is also possible if you're an Eldritch Knight type character or Mystic Theurge under Divine Power. Use plain old Contingency "Wraithstrike" set to go off the moment you use the staff's extra damage ability. Not quite as impressive since you can only do this once per fight and must tweak your character's build to get the biggest payoff, but it still makes for a nice surprise for the BBEG if you do manage it. If your DM won't allow Wraithstrike cheese, contingent True Strike at the end of a max Power Attack staff charge also works for a one hit takedown. |
| SunTzuWarmaster05-16-07, 08:46 AM | Typically, the good go-tos fo me have been Freedom of movement - when movement is limited by an example occasion such as terrain, grappled, web, entangled state, ect. Teleport to cleric nearest home - when at 10hp or less Mirror Image - if struck physically Dimension Door or Gaseous Form - if grappled Water Breathing - if underwater <fill in the spell> - when I touch my nose (free spell) - Detect Thoughts is worthy mention here because this will mask the casting (essentially a free Still/Silent), which is valuable in a social situation. |
| lukelightning05-16-07, 10:11 AM | ...summon 1d3 fiendish dire weasels around the foe who struck me...Don't forget to have a Vampiric Touch in your list, so if you need to heal you can drain your own summons.... The contingent spell has to be one that affects the caster, so the summoning won't work. And while vampiric touch would work, I think, you still need to spend a standard action to attack with it so you might as well just cast it regularly. |
| Seeker9505-16-07, 10:27 AM | while vampiric touch would work, I think, you still need to spend a standard action to attack with it so you might as well just cast it regularly.Assuming you're grappled, this could be rather difficult. |
| lukelightning05-16-07, 01:16 PM | Assuming you're grappled, this could be rather difficult. Very true. But if my wimpy wizard gets grappled he's not going to bother trying to damage the grappler (which could have over a hundred hit points). He's going to want to escape immediately. Blink looks like my best option. |
