Hi guys,

I was wondering, what happens if because of a contingent spell or an immediate action, your target becomes illegal?

For example, what would happen if a wizard has the craft contingency feat and a contingent invisibility spell should he ever be the target of a dispel magic spell?

That is, in part, the purpose of contingency. :D
If the target of your spell is no longer a valid target, the spell fails - wasted.

So contingent invisibility to negate dispel magic is a valid tactic :D?

I would say so. Of course, by the time you can place a contingent invisibility on yourself, your fears of a targeted dispel magic are significantly lower, as there are many other low-cost defenses.

Could you share those other low-cost defenses with me? :D.

My immediate thought turns out to be wrong... I was thinking of protection against area effect dispel, rather than targeted. (For that, Nystul's magic aura cast at the start of each day works well. This assumes your caster level is highest at the start of the day.)

Maybe your plan is the best one. Especially since the focus can be used the next time you need it. But with contingency being a 6th level spell, I'm not sure what you do prior to reaching 11th level.

The idea is to protect those very vulnerable contingent spells created with the craft contingent spell feat.

Before level 11, my players usually use a ring of counterspell with dispel magic in it.
