Hi all :)

I just find a question when a wizard in my team is preparing his spells.

Can he cast Contingeny and set the condition as"if struck by energy, active protection from energy"? (For example, if he is struck by fireball, protection from fire will be actived and if he is first struck by lighting bolt, protection from electricity will instead be actived.)

or perhaps he has to set specific energy type when cast Contingeny?

PoE states : "Protection from energy grants temporary immunity to the type of energy you specify when you cast it."

Contingency states : "You can place another spell upon your person so that it comes into effect under some condition you dictate when casting contingency. The contingency spell and the companion spell are cast at the same time."

So the energy type must be selected at the time of the casting, not at the time of the triggering event.

However, for example, if you use PoE from fire, and cast Contingency to activate PoE when you take would take fire damage, I see nothing wrong with wording the trigger as such. If you get hit with lightning, nothing happens other than your standard reflex save for half.

Take Contingent Energy Resistance ('http://www.imarvintpa.com/dndLive/spells.php?ID=4915') instead.
