| lutherreed12-19-03, 10:04 PM | Is it possible to cast this spell on just the blade of my weapon? The spell description say "...springs forth from an object that you touch." Basicly does this mean the whole object, or just the section of the object you designate with your touch? What about boulders? |
| Topaz12-19-03, 10:10 PM | Well continual flame is used to make an everburning torch. my guess it that the whole torch isn't on fire just the end. so yeah.. limit your object to the sword's blade and not the hilt. A torch or weapon could be argued are multiple objects make in to one. A boulder however is a single object. -Topaz |
| channel_dunlap12-19-03, 10:15 PM | just out of curiosity, why do you want to continual flame your sword? Never have the need for stealth? |
| lanilifar12-19-03, 10:16 PM | Stealth = Sheath sword I conclude this is why the question was asked in the first place. |
| channel_dunlap12-20-03, 01:46 AM | hmm.. with continual flame its a flame for all intents and purposes except heat though, so it would still be billowing out of the sheath, at least thats how I would rule it. I dunno, if your DM would allow you to hide it that easy, then go for it. I wouldn't though. |
| Seeker9512-20-03, 06:44 AM | The sheath would count as total cover. No light would spill over. Continual flame was created for the purpose of making a light source. It used to be called continual light. No need to try to hose a player who wants to get creative with his light source. Save that for the player who wants to get abusive instead. |
| Wizard12-20-03, 07:07 AM | I like the idea, but I don't think it would be practical without Quickdraw. |
| kreynolds12-20-03, 08:14 AM | Hey, anybody wonder if continual flame makes any sound? Seriously. |
| Seeker9512-20-03, 08:48 AM | Originally posted by kreynolds Hey, anybody wonder if continual flame makes any sound? Seriously. I'm confident it does not. It is not a fire. The noise a flame makes is from the burning of the source material and air. Continual flame does not burn anything, so there would be no sound. |
| lutherreed12-20-03, 09:01 AM | Yes the purpose of the question was for my quick drawn short sword for my human who cannot see anything in the dark. The is another purpose as well though. Have you ever had someone come running at you with a flaming sword? I would say that give a small bonus to Intimidate. At least until the guy found out it couldn't hurt him. The flames anyway. And just to clearify the spell specificly says it can be covered and hidden but not smothered or quenched. It also creates no heat and doesn't use oxygen. |
| ksbsnowowl12-20-03, 01:32 PM | Just to give another reason why/how you can choose to enchant only the blade with the fire: The material components include 50 GP (IIRC) of ruby dust that must be sprinked on the object to be affected. Only sprinkle the dust on the blade, and the hilt will not be affected. One thing I actually saw in an adventure once was a fighter that had gotten continual flame cast on his icy burst longsword. This potentially would cause his foes to waste protective spells by warding against fire damage instead of cold. |
