How would you go about converting the Jewel of Attacks found in the 2E DMG?

It uses random encounters as the basis for its effect...

What did it do?

Sorry for taking such a long time.

Once picked up it always magically found its way back in your possession.
It was a cursed item that doubled the likelihood of encountering wandering monsters and the likelihood of pursuit when monsters are encountered and the party seeks to evade them by flight.

well, you could make it so that it alerts nearby monsters of the PCs presence.

alternatively, you could actually have it use summon monster <I-IX> to generate random encounters :D

hmmm... if you want them to be not summoned, then you could have it a calling effect instead.

hmmmm... or you could make it spawn undead randomly or something...

or, you could just add in a random encounter mechanism to your D&D system. there's nothing that says you can't have random encounters. just they don't have specific rules for if you do.

but anyways, probably the first or the last one are most reasonable.

Cool ideas Jaid :)

I'll go with the calling option and have it work like the Summon Nature's Ally spells, calling local natural creatures. (Summon Monster calls extraplanar creatures, so its no good.)

hehehehe... now that's a cursed item ;)

technically, i don't think you gain XP for defeating summoned critters.

and no matter what, you can't loot them =D

called, of course, is a whole different matter... but summoned not even the corpses remain :D

so evil you could call it eville... like it was the frooits of the deville...

Basically the new jewel of attacks works like this: You display it for all to see in a sacred area, such as a necropolis, where there is very little or no security. Only "criminals" (such as an entreprenneur thief PC :D) and the moraly deviant will dare to steal the jewel, a symptom of a greater problem and a sure indicator those people have no place in this sacred area. Thus, the jewel always finds itself in the hands of the deserving.

Jewel of Attacks: These large gleaming gems are always found afixed to an ornementation of some kind, such as part of a fresco or statue. Such a gem registers as a stone of good luck to detect spells unless a caster succeeds at a DC 16 Will save. It is cursed, however, and attracts nearby creatures when carried on your person. Every day the gem is in your possession you attract as many creatures as those normally summoned through a summon nature’s ally V spell. Creatures arrive one at a time throughout the day and immediately attack the possessor of the jewel to the death. Once picked up, the gem cannot be disposed of by any nonmagical means — if it is thrown away or smashed, it reappears somewhere on your person. If a remove curse spell is cast upon a jewel of attacks, or if its possessor dies, the item reappears on its fixture. The possessor can also put the gem back into its fixture, putting a stop to the curse.
