| Darksoupgod01-04-06, 02:19 AM | Has anyone tried this? My group is playing a magic-central campaign soon, and I wanted to play a Transmuter who alters objects and the battlefield strategically. It seems like a reasonable idea, at least for the walls made of solid matter. I see them working like the exisiting spells, except all having a duration of instantaneous and requiring an equal amount of the matter they're made of to be shifted and reformed. That requirement might lower the level of some of the spells, since the conjured walls can generally be made anywhere. Also, is there a Sorceror/Wizard spell similar to Wood Shape, besides Stone Shape? That would be usefull as well. |
| Always-Late01-04-06, 02:22 AM | I suppose you could fabricate a wall. |
| Darksoupgod01-04-06, 02:42 AM | That would take too long and probably wouldn't cover a large enough area. Fabricate is meant for finely crafting material, not shifting chunks of it around. Also, Stoneshape and Greater Stoneshape are unreasonably high in level for a caster trying to make larger, cruder shapes. |

How often is magical force or fire sitting around the batlefield? Well getting a wall of stone/earth springing out from the ground isn't that hard to phantom. A wall of ice in the arctic should be easy as well. Wall of force and wall of fire is of course out of question and wall of iron most likely as well. But creating a transmutation version of wall of stone and wall of ice should be easy. I'd probably knock them down a level or give them greater effect to balance the more narrow recruitments (needing the right underground) but other then that I'd say he's good to go :) . |
| was_fired01-04-06, 05:15 PM | There already is a low level wall spell that fits you desires, stone shape. The look on my DM's face when I used it to block a hallway was great, same for when punching holes in walls. If you want a wall spell like that just specify the amount of material you can transmute and the types you can transmute. Nice and simple (some calculations required). |
| Karelzarath01-04-06, 05:27 PM | Walls create matter from nothing. Thus they are evocation. Creating matter is the purview of the Conjuration(creation) subschool, hence wall of stone and wall of iron being Conjuration(creation) spells. Yes, wall of force and wall of fire are Evocation spells, but those aren't the spells the OP was asking about. That said, if you really want a battlefield-control caster, you should look into Abjuration, Conjuration, and Illusion. Low-level, you're looking at grease, hold portal, fog cloud, minor image, and ghost sound. Mid-level gets you dimensional anchor, hallucinatory terrain, solid fog, wall of stone, wall of iron, mirage arcana, and veil. These are all effective spells for making the enemy fight when, where, and how you want. Transmutation is only helpful with the transmute X to Y spells, and there are very few of them. I would specialize in either Abjuration or Conjuration and disallow Evocation and Necromancy. You may also want to look at the Initiate of the Seven Fold Veil PrC from Complete Arcane. This character is essentially the ultimate support caster, so I'd be careful that you or your party doesn't expect the standard "boom" arcane caster. Paired with some ranged attackers, the party could be frighteningly efficient at destroying foes at range. Any melee opponents will have to really work to get at the party effectively. |
