I've always wanted to play an illusionist but I'm never quite sure what I can do with the illusion spell in the PHB, espcially the lower level spells. If anyone out there has stories of ways they've used illusion spells I'd really appreciated hearing them. Thanks.

I always tried to tie my illusions into some reality, to "bank" off the effects of the real spells, etc..

For instance, I had a wizard casting "fake" fireballs at a horde of orcs. After the first one went, a couple orcs figured out it was an illusion, and told their buddies. I cast another phantasm spell, and a couple flinched and took damage, but the rest just stood there, laughing and moving forward. I readied my third spell, and by that time, they weren't even interested in dodging anymore, they knew it was all fake. That's when I switched for a REAL fireball spell, and blasted them all with no save possible.

That works great with wands, too... .Hit em with a wand shot to make them believe, then "fire" a couple more phantasm spells to hold them tight. WHen they figure out that you are shooting blanks, switch back.

Use an illusion on top of another mage's spell: Burning hands with a phantasmal force can seem ten times as horrible. An illusion of a red dragon gains more realism when a druid is heating armor/metal as the dragon approaches. Enhance the effect of an entangle spell with an illusion, and not only bind your enemies, but scare the heck out of them.
