| ManinBlaq05-19-05, 11:15 AM | Ok .. say I pick up a potion of Greater Magic Fang (+5). (3,000 gp) Then I go and find a high level Sorcerer / Wizard .. who is in the business of selling his magical wares. How much will it cost to have him cast Permanency on me? It is a 5th level spell, and of course I will seek out the most prominent / powerful enchanter that I can find. The only component is 1,500 XP (that I believe the caster pays). So is that just 3,000 gp? Assuming that I could find a high level caster (cleric, druid) -- who is willing, how much would it cost for them to cast GMF +5 directly on me? It should be considerably less than the cost of the potion. |
| kSquared05-19-05, 11:21 AM | This information is in the SRD under "Goods and Services". Assuming you can find a suitable spellcaster, the cost to have them cast a spell on you is (10 gp) x (spell level) x (caster level), in addition to any material components or XP components required. There's also a special note that says (...) if the additional costs put the spell’s total cost above 3,000 gp, that spell is not generally available. Making a greater magic fang permanent requires a minimum caster level of 11th according to the table. Thus, it'll cost you (10 gp) * (5th level) * (11th caster level) = 660 gold pieces for the permanency, plus whatever the wizard charges you for the loss of his XP. If this total exceeds 3,000 gold pieces, you won't be able to generally find a wizard willing to cast it. That generally means it's special-quest time. =) |
| ManinBlaq05-19-05, 11:36 AM | Excellent.... Well the spell cost itself is cheap. (1,000 for a level 20 wizard). But I don't see info on dealing with XP components and modifying the cost accordingly. Even when creating magical items, the material cost is doubled to determine price. XP for the most part seems to be ignored. So, I can see paying anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 gp. Other than buying a scroll, and casting it myself -- is there a way that I can provide the XP component? |
| kSquared05-19-05, 11:42 AM | Excellent.... Well the spell cost itself is cheap. (1,000 for a level 20 wizard). But I don't see info on dealing with XP components and modifying the cost accordingly. That's in the same section: If the spell has an XP cost, add 5 gp per XP lost. Since it costs 1,500 XP, it'll cost you an additional 7,500 gold pieces. Together with the permanency cost, that's 8,160 gold pieces, well in excess of the standard 3,000 gp limit. Better hope that wizard needs a few errands to be run. I forget the mechanics of how others pay for components (if they can at all), but I'm sure it's all covered in there somewhere. |
| ManinBlaq05-19-05, 12:03 PM | It would cost 600 for the Greater Magic Fang. Then 7500 for the permanency. Thank you for your assistance Kay. |
| Jaid05-19-05, 08:29 PM | the same person has to cast both spells iirc. which makes it even harder to find someone who can do that for you. |
| ManinBlaq05-19-05, 09:10 PM | I don't see anything under the goods and services section ..nor under the permancy spell description that suggests they have to have originally casted the spell that is being made permanent. |
| Jaid05-19-05, 09:19 PM | hmmmm.... right you are... blasted 3.5... keeps making me wrong =P well then, in that case, i guess it works. |
| The Simbul05-20-05, 12:12 AM | Under the first table in the Permanency spell description it says "You cast the desired spell and then follow it with the permanency spell. " A strict interpretation of that statement could require the caster of the spell and the caster of Permanency to be one in the same, whilst a moderate position might lean either way or rule that the statement only applies to the first section of example spells, whilst a liberal intepretation wouldnt probably care in either scenario. Its also worth noting that the prices for having a spell cast are based off the lowest possible caster level. Which means if you dont want your Magic Fang easily dispelled (and permanent spells on other creatures/objects/areas than the caster can be dispelled normally) then I suggest you plan on investing more money. |
| ManinBlaq05-20-05, 11:15 AM | Reading between the lines of your strict interpretation ... Greater Magic Fang is not even an Arcane Spell. I find it very difficult that it would have an entry on the table, without some sort of reference to a Druid 5+ / Wizard (or Ranger 11 / Wizard 9) - as being the only casters capable of that combination. The cost for the permenacy, from a level 20 wizard would be 8,500 gp and the only way to acquire it in a game would be to role-play for it. Compared to a amulet of mighty fists ..(150,000 gp) .. it's still quite a deal. |
| Akharu05-20-05, 12:24 PM | It'll be wonderful for you until our dm casts dispel magic and you lose it. Then it will be wonderful for me. Picture if you will... two hours later... |
| ManinBlaq05-20-05, 12:58 PM | Yes that's a very potential threat. That's also why it's effectively much cheaper. Besides, that's also why I'm going to buy a contingency spell - to dispell the dispell cast at me. Mwhaaa haha haaahaha.. |
| Akharu05-20-05, 01:12 PM | Last I checked...your monk has absolutely no gold. You could always prostitute yourself for the necessary funds. So could your monk. |
| TheMagister05-22-05, 05:16 AM | Good luck getting J to allow that, MIB. No really, good luck. When he does, he'll loosen up the purse strings and allow some other fun stuff in, too. I'm with Akharu, though. I'd love to see that Dispel Magic. Heck, I'd think it was funny if it happened to ME. :D TM |
