The DMG says that you divide the cost of and item by 5 if it's usable once per day. Do you divide the cost of an item by 50 if it's usable once every tendays? IIRC this is not the case, but I can't seem to find a clear ruling on this.

Once every 2 days would be .5/5, or 1/10. Once every ten days would be .1/10 if my math serves me right. That would be 1/100.

I thought there was a different progression for items usable less often than once a day.

IIRC this is not the case, but I can't seem to find a clear ruling on this. That's because there isn't one.

In general, you need to price on utility. In many situations, an item that can only be activated once per two days is no less useful than one that can be activated once per day, either because the situation doesn't come up that often (eg raise dead) or because you're only "on" for one day at a time.

Inconvenient that.

I'm more than a little troubled by the notion of some PCs constructing uber power items at 1/50th the cost even if it can only be used once per tenday.

I really though that there was an FAQ or something on this topic.

Agreed. I'd limit it to at least one use per day (1/5 cost).

Or, if someone absolutely insisted, I'd create a different, week based formula. For example x_times_a_week)/7. So, once per day activation: 1/5 of the base price, once per week: 1/7.
And it would have additional limit: 24 hours interval between uses. That would prevent creating an item that would function 3 times per week, and expending all of those usages in the single day of the week.

Then again, I don't allow such items in the first place. Either it is an attempt to get a really powerful ability into a magic item at an affordable cost, or it is a poorly designed item in the first place.

An item of Meteor Swarm usable once every 6 years! Cost to create: 12.5 GP, 1 EXP. Why would anyone make one use items of anything that doesn't have an XP or Expensive material componant cost?!

On a serious note, this is one of the few times I'm going to agree with Seeker's draconian take on item creation. Items usable less often than 1/day *can't* be priced well using the given formula. If you *do* let them get away with it, by all means make sure that the cost on the item doesn't drop below, or even near, the cost of a one use item of the same effect.

I concur.

It's just driving me nuts because I swear I read an analysis on this somewhere that gave an official clarification.:banghead:

Evidently losing my mind is more inconvenient than I anticipated.....Don't fret over it. Think of it as an opportunity to learn new things every day... even if you use the same textbook for the rest of your life! (And then there's the meeting new people benefit!)

You buy 5000 of the amulets, only to realize they were all used within the past year so they cant be used again for 5 more years.

1) Recognize that these things are abuseable.
2) Recognize that the proper way to price these kinds of things (because of #1. above) is NOT by an arthimetic progression, but by an exponential one.
3) Rule that recently found or purchased magic items have ALWAYS been used approximately 1/2 the time to recharge ago (i.e. when you buy a 1/week item, it was used 3 days ago.) That is part of why the sale price is so low. What you think the shop owner is a fool, not using these things?

---------------

What do I mean by exponential instead of arthirmetic?

First, remeber that
once ever cost exactly 1/80 of an at will item. ANY multi-use item should never cost less than 1/80 an at will item.

1/day = 1/5 at will
1/week = 1/15 price of at will, NOT 1/35
1/month = 1/50 price of at will, NOT 1/150 (150 would be cheaper than a once ever)
1/year = 1/70 price of an at will item, not some ridiculous number cheaper than a one use item.

In my mind, it is not worth the purchase of a 1/year item IF you have to wait one year before it activates. the first time.

I like that approach. I may swipe it outright, Thanks!
