| Skyduke04-19-07, 12:46 PM | Hi - I was wondering if there were any official rules regarding such items? If so, could anyone tell me where I might find them? I'd like to know if there are rules for increasing the DC of an individual school of magic, for all of them, what the cost per point of DC improvement is, and whether they stack with the Spell focus feats. I do hope those exist - honestly, for epic (and sometimes non-epic play), relying solely on items that increase intelligence and on feats can sometimes make it difficult to actually land a spell on someone... Many thanks. :) |

| Merestil Haye04-19-07, 01:32 PM | One of the design goals in 3.5 was to make it harder to boost the DC of spells compared to 3.0; feats had their bonuses scaled back or cut out completely, as did prestige classes. Therefore I very much doubt that WotC would undo that by introducing items that simply raise the DC of spells. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I really think the answer is "no". The only direct ways are boosting the spell level, boosting your casting ability, or the remaining DC boosting feats and class abilities. |
| tarkin04-19-07, 01:54 PM | Simplest way to increase the DC is to use the metamagic feat Heighten. Works well with scrolls, wands, staves, etc. Some people feel it is too expensive, because it also raises other things. But it is core and legal and simple to calculate. A scroll of Charm Person's normal DC is 10+1 (level) +0 (stat) = 11. Price = 25 gp. A scroll of CP heightend to level 2's DC is 10 + 2 (level) + 1 (stat) = 13. Price = 150 gp. ============== I could see something along the lines of a Rod of Heighten. But actually doing Heightening would be wierd. So this is my modification. Rod Of Power Spells This Rod can be used upto 3/day. It raises the DC of those spells by +2. The lesser version works only for spells of 3rd or lower, the normal version works only for spells of 6th or lower. The Greater works on spells upto 9th level. Strong (no school); CL 17th; Craft Rod, Heighten Spell; Price 14,000 gp (lesser), 28,000 gp (normal), 56,000 gp (greater). Pricing is based on upgrading a 3/day magic item from 3rd to 4th level. 3 × 5 × 1,800 gp *3/5 = 16200 4 x 7 x 1800 * 3/5 = 30240 ====== Difference = 14040. Round down to 14k. Lesser ======= Double it for Normal, Double it again for Greater. |
| Skyduke04-19-07, 02:07 PM | Thanks. I already knew all of these... My concern is mostly about epic play, as mentioned before. Maximized energy drains and bestow greater curse work well, when the target isn't immune to them... Otherwise it becomes almost impossible to have even a 30% chance of affecting a monster with a CR equivalent to your level with a spell, even on his 'weak' (heh) save. |
| Thiez04-19-07, 02:14 PM | Limited Wish can give -7 to an opponents next saving throw without a save. The 300 xp cost doesn't mean anything at those levels. |
| tarkin04-19-07, 02:25 PM | Hm. OK, I missed the Epic part. Let's try again. How about: Rod of Epic Powerfull Spells This rod may be used 3/day, as a free action when casting a spell. When you use this rod and cast a spell, the victim can no use their regular saving throw bonus. Instead cut their save in 1/2, round up, and add 10. Cost: ????? Not sure about the cost, this is a strange magic item. Anyone have an idea? Is it worth more than 500,000? Less? |
| jacobi28911-08-07, 12:48 PM | Sorry about necro-bumping this, but I was going to ask the same question and I figured this topic would do just fine. So does anyone have anything new to add to this topic since April? |

Should have wording that this can't be more than your save bonus: Because as written a Fighter's Will save becomes 10 at level 21 even if normally, save should be 6. |
| FrostHammer11-09-07, 02:33 AM | There already are items that boost DCs. Look at Veil of Allure in the MiC. Boosts all Enchantment spells and Charisma-based abilities by 2 DC. Costs a bundle too. Like 16,000 I think. |
| foxtail11-09-07, 11:00 AM | A psionatrix from the EPH takes up a neck slot, costs 8,000 gp, and increases the saving throw DC of a single discipline of powers by one. It seems reasonable that a similar item to enhance one school of magic would be the same price. Since a general rule of thumb in item pricing seems to be "square the bonus," one could estimate that +2 to one school's DC would cost 32,000 gp, +3 would be 72,000, and so on. |
