| Valoy_Muniz06-25-07, 10:34 AM | This question came up as we where ending the game last night. How much should it cost to copy a spell from an npc spell book? Cost to have some one cast it for you (Minimum level cost) Spell, 0-level Caster level × 5 gp (5gp) Spell, 1st-level Caster level × 10 gp (10gp) Spell, 2nd-level Caster level × 20 gp (60gp) Spell, 3rd-level Caster level × 30 gp (150gp) Spell, 4th-level Caster level × 40 gp (280gp) Spell, 5th-level Caster level × 50 gp (450gp) Spell, 6th-level Caster level × 60 gp (660gp) Spell, 7th-level Caster level × 70 gp (910gp) Spell, 8th-level Caster level × 80 gp (1200gp) Spell, 9th-level Caster level × 90 gp (1530gp) Spell Caster level is half class level. Prices assume that the scroll was made at the minimum caster level. 0 12 gp 1st 25 gp 2nd 150 gp 3rd 375 gp 4th 700 gp 5th 1,125 gp 6th 1,650 gp 7th 2,275 gp 8th 3,000 gp 9th 3,825 gp We where thinking about using 1/4 the price as a base line for copying spells from an others spell book (for common spells like fireball). It would come out like this Level If from 1/4 scroll If 1/4 casting 0 3gp 1gp 2sp 5cp 1 6gp 2sp 5cp 2gp 5sp 2 37gp 5sp 15gp 3 93gp 3sp 8sp 37gp 5sp 4 175gp 70gp 5 281gp 2sp 5cp 112gp 5sp 6 412gp 5sp 165gp 7 568gp 7sp 5cp 227gp 5sp 8 750gp 300gp 9 956gp 2sp 5cp 382gp 5sp Even though I am the player asking this, I think the 1/4 the scroll price is the better price. I would have to find the wiz willing to do this but we still need the base line to start from. My DM asked me to post it and he pains to look at this before our game next Friday. |

Unfortunately, there's a pretty hefty limitation on that: Wizard Spells and Borrowed Spellbooks A wizard can use a borrowed spellbook to prepare a spell she already knows and has recorded in her own spellbook, but preparation success is not assured. First, the wizard must decipher the writing in the book (see Arcane Magical Writings, above). Once a spell from another spellcaster’s book is deciphered, the reader must make a Spellcraft check (DC 15 + spell’s level) to prepare the spell. If the check succeeds, the wizard can prepare the spell. She must repeat the check to prepare the spell again, no matter how many times she has prepared it before. If the check fails, she cannot try to prepare the spell from the same source again until the next day. (However, as explained above, she does not need to repeat a check to decipher the writing.) It's really only useful if you've lost your own spellbook. Other than that, it's 50gp x Spell Level to borrow a spellbook to copy a spell into your own spellbook, plus the usual scribing costs. |

That is what we are talking about. Where did you find that please? The reason I ask is level 0 and 1 is cheaper to get it from a scroll then. |

But 50gp x 0 is 0! :D It's in the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/arcaneSpells.htm#addingSpellstoaWizardsS pellbook) and in the same section in the PHB regarding writing spells into your spellbook. I think it's right before the spells, don't have a page number. |
