| Nicholas the Paladin11-05-06, 08:33 AM | Hi guys, What would the cost of adding a feat to a magical item be? Are there rules for this? Let's say I could use a feat continuous, or 5/day . |
| Seeker9511-05-06, 08:50 AM | Arms & Equipment Guide had a formula for adding a Feat to an item. It is horribly variable in its balance. Too expensive for some Feats, too cheap for others. To add a Feat to an item, use the guidelines in the DMG: 1. Compare to similarly functioning items, and price accordingly. 2. Compare to similarly powerful items, and price accordingly. 3. Use your best judgment. (In that order) |

(In that order) okay, I gave the A&EG a look, and it seems that being able to use a feat costs about 10.000 GP....that would probably be 'continiously'. I was thinking about adding the 'flyby attack' feat to an item that gives flight. The cost of 10.000GP seems fair. Although 5/day would be enough...lowering the price? |
| Seeker9511-05-06, 06:12 PM | 5/day would NOT lower the price. 5/day divides the cost by (5/5). |

Well first, it is basically flying spring attack. Spring Attack using the poor A&EG would cost approx 30,000 gp (two pre-reqs), so I think this feat (Flyby Attack) is one of the broken ones using the A&EG rules. How else can you get the ability to attack in the air? With Perfect flying. Perfect flying costs between 113,760 gp and 118,000 gp. That means that the ability to attack while flying could be argued as costing 57,000 gp or more. As for your question on how a 3/day would work, it would allow you to take a standard action during a move action three times a day (in three separate rounds.) |
| DarkRhystar11-06-06, 11:50 AM | Heroics (SpC 113) gives you a Fighter bonus feat. Using the pricing of items on page 286 of the DMG we get: 3 (CL) * 2 (SL) * 2000 (Continuous) * 1.5 (10 min/level) = 18,000 gp |

How else can you get the ability to attack in the air? With Perfect flying. Perfect flying costs between 113,760 gp and 118,000 gp..) Whatthe? I haven't got a clue what you're talking about. a) there are plenty of ways to get the flying ability through items: mostly they're under 20.000 GP b) the 'Fly' spell states that you have 'good' maneuverability, that it's like walking and you are abe to attack normally That means that the ability to attack while flying could be argued as costing 57,000 gp or more..) ?? please explain As for your question on how a 3/day would work, it would allow you to take a standard action during a move action three times a day (in three separate rounds.) okay, so wouldn't that drop the price considerably, since it's not like 'having' the feat for real: *3/5 at least Heroics gives you a Fighter bonus feat. Using the pricing of items on page 286 of the DMG we get: 3 (CL) * 2 (SL) * 2000 (Continuous) * 1.5 (10 min/level) = 18,000 gp that's something completely different. so let's take Risners comment ito account that 'flyby attack' is at leats worth 3 feats, but I make the item less times (3) usable and decrease the duration: 3 (3 feats) * 3 (CL) * 2 (SL) * 2000 *3/5 * 1/X (3 * 1 round) * = 21.600/X gp Should there be a decrease in price (X) since it will be usable only 3 times 1 round? |

If you used the Heroics spell as a basis you would find these problems: 1) The spell allows fighter feats, Flyby-Attack isn't a fighter feat. 2) You applied the continuous formula incorrectly. 3) You jumped to the formula without calculating the power of the item. 4) If you add this ability to an item with flying, you need to pay 1.5 more (MDA). CL3 * SL2 * 2,000 *1.5 (duration) = 18,000 gp 3/day would be 10,800 gp but would last 30 minutes each. I just looked at the Flyby Attack closer, it isn't exactly Spring Attack. You still take the AoO for leaving threatened areas. Since 3/day doesn't effectively limit the use, I would stick with continuous. The price at 18,000 sounds about right. I would say it is slightly more powerful than Cloak of Arachnida. So a revised price estimate sounds ok at 18,000 * 1.5 (MDA) = 27,000 gp |
| Nicholas the Paladin11-07-06, 02:23 AM | I understand that there are no rules about magical abilities, that have a very short duration. 30 minutes * 3 is indeed about the same worth as a continuous effect. But I want this item to be a 'just in case' type of item, so I would be content with 3 * 1 round. Making it effectively usable for 3 actions. Would (lets say) 10.000 GP be a good price then? (I'm just opening up discussions) (Yes, the 'FlyBy-feat' makes you subject to AoO's still) |
| risner11-07-06, 08:31 AM | 3 * 1 round. Making it effectively usable for 3 actions. Would (lets say) 10.000 GP be a good price then? 10,800 gp sounds good for 3/day of 3 rounds each (9 rounds a day) When added to another item, that is 10,800*1.5(MDA) = 16,200 gp |
